Gu's Dumplings apparently just opened a few days ago at the Krog Street Market - I had no idea.... While walking around the market at lunch time, Gu's had, by far, the longest line - which we took as a good sign.
After waiting in line for a good 15 minutes to place our order, it took another ten before we could pick it up. In other words, if you are here on your lunch break, Gu's might, at least at this point, not be your best option simply based on the excessive wait time.
This may change, of course, as Gu's becomes more established and loses the large contingent of patrons who simply want to try out a new restaurant.
If you know the drill at Krog Street Market, you can probably guess how it goes at Gu's, too: You order at the counter, wait around a bit until your food is ready, pick it up at the other end of the counter, and find a place to sit anywhere inside or outside the market.
We ordered spring rolls as an appetizer and, upon my first bite, I thought I was in trouble - but not in a good way. Frankly, the spring roll tasted like it could have been bought in the freezer section of a grocery store.
The dough was way too thick and dense while the stuffing was utterly lackluster and didn't seem fresh at all. In fact, it seemed like it was lacking altogether as it was completely overpowered by the thick crust.
My main dish was a full order of veggie dumplings. I will say that their dark green color made me a bit skeptical, especially after the disappointing experience with the spring rolls.
However, my first bite tasted alright and thus, I ate more. The more I ate, the more I liked it - it's rare for that to happen to me.
In the end, I was ready to walk back to the counter to order a second helping - which I did not do only because of time constraints.
So, overall, a pleasant experience - minus the spring rolls and the excessive wait. If I assume that the wait time is simply due to growing pains after first opening this business, I would can say that I would happily go back for more - dumplings, that is. Certainly not for the spring rolls...
