“Lovely place oozing of 'uniqueness'”

Restaurante El Horno de Candida
Ranked #67 of 283 Restaurants in Almunecar
Description: Restaurant El Horno de Candida is located in the old town of El Castillo. It was a bread oven to which the people of the area came even to bake their own dough. On arrival we found a building with thick walls and solid construction on two floors and a splendid terrace. We offer you a natural meal without artifice. Like the one our grandparents ate, but with a touch of now. We try to offer local and seasonal products and a method of homemade and natural preparation. Large vegetarian and vegan menu. We also offer wild fish and Iberian meats without hormones. You are welcome to our house.

Went here for a nice evening out and were not disappointed, quite the opposite. Well cooked dishes for meat/fish eaters, vegetarian options available, reasonable prices, LOTS of ambiance (do take the opportunity to take a stroll through all of it - suprises awaits around every nook and cranny) and such helpful staff. And it IS open nighttime from 8pm.

If you are bored with standard Spanish restaurant fare, you need to try this -- especially if you are vegetarian or vegan. The building is delightful, with rooms on several floors, and a beautiful shady roof terrace -- if it's a fine day, ask if the terrace is open.

On our first visit we tried the 3-course lunchtime menu del dia: 10.90 without drinks. That's more expensive than most places, but it's worth the extra. There were two choices of starters, and three mains: meat, fish, and vegetarian. The food was copious without being excessive; I had a very nice salad and then a delicious tagine of lamb with couscous. Desserts are simple: we finished with ice cream.

We liked it enough that we were back a few days later to try the a la carte menu on the terrace. It was superb. There is a very wide choice of dishes, including many vegetarian and a few vegan. We shared a mousse of pheasant with toast to start. Main courses were delicious pork loin in a mustard sauce with caña de miel, and divine pasta parcels filled with pear and Gorgonzola in a creamy sauce. A perfect balance of flavours. As well as sharing one starter between two, we advise sharing dessert, because the carrot cake was massive, as was the puff pastry with cream and chocolate sauce -- each easily enough for two.

A note on service: I see many people here commenting that the service is slow. It is by Spanish standards, but I often feel rushed in Spanish restaurants. It was slow, but that was fine by us. With so many separate floors and rooms the staff have to do a lot of running up and down stairs, and there isn't always someone on the spot to note that you've finished a plate. And the dishes are freshly prepared. The staff are really friendly and pleasant, so it was no hardship to take two hours over lunch.

We'll be back -- un abrazo !

Excellent Food, tasteful, rich and well served. The place is also really very nice with different small rooms where you can also have intimacy if you would wish that. I was really very pleasantly surprised to discover this small restaurant. It was worth the trip we made to get there and also worth every penny we paid for our meal.

They take very good care of you and your company. Since I have problems with gluten intolerance they gave that full attention without giving out of quality. To have paté with good gluten free bread is a dream for me.
I recommend all my friends to visit this friendly and good restaurant.
