I stayed here with colleagues for a mixture of business and pleasure - if you are looking for a good, cheap hotel - Estrella del Mar is just great. It is situated just across the road from the beach. Although it has to be said that Motril isn't really a lively beach resort. There is a regular bus service from right outside the hotel conecting to the town of Motril and Salobrenia. There is parking available behind the hotel.
The hotel is very simple - either double or twin beds, marbled floor, chest of drawers, bedside table, large fitted wardrobe and small TV - there is no hairdryer! The rooms are kept spotlessly clean and sheets and towels were changed every day. I had a room on the first floor (105) which had a large patio - though the view was out over a flat roof to a play area. There is a small lounge area - but this really is basic and a little tired.
Downstairs is a bar - typically Spanish and well used by the local Spanish community. Breakfast was toasted roll with oil and tomato or butter and jams, freshly squeezed orange juice and coffee - fruit was also available. The restaurant is very popular with the locals and the menu extensive. The staff are friendly and polite and were keen to make my stay as comfortable as possible. I paid Euros 35 in November for the room and breakfast.
I think if you just want to use the hotel as a base this place is ideal - you could pay over twice the price at the Elba Hotel which is almost next door. Athough Motril isn't a touristy town it is very typically Spanish and prices are generally that bit lower. It's a great place from which to explore the local area - if you're not looking for luxury then this place is ideal.
