I booked the family in for a Mother's Day lunch and expected to sit in the restaurant section of the pub, so was slightly surprised when the rather harassed-looking waitress guided us to a table in the bar area - they had obviously taken a lot of bookings for the day!

The pub has been done out in some style but hasn't gone completely posh, leading to some incongruities - the back entrance, through the cigarette butts, is particularly unpromising and the TVs in the bar showed the rugby with the sound on (not that I was complaining, but I'm not sure what some of the mothers made of it).

Anyway, once we'd settled ourselves in our impressions became more favourable, and the arrival of the food improved them further. Both our lamb and beef mains were superbly cooked, with roasties and veg that were well seasoned and all of it HOT, something many places seem to neglect. Desserts were good too.

Our experience wasn't perfect - a lack of communication almost resulted in us paying for a third meal we hadn't ordered - but despite the hiccups caused by the place being so busy, we'll certainly be back, potentially for Father's Day.

Five of us went for a birthday. We ordered two sirloin steaks, two roast cods and a burger. My roast cod (with chorizo, blue potatoes, samphire, clams and mussels) was impeccably fresh and cooked to perfection. The remaining ingredients complemented the cod in a very satisfying way. The steaks were large and as ordered, melt-in-the-mouth meatiness with divine chips. The burger was consumed with relish - literally and metaphorically.

Every scrap was eaten and, with drinks, the bill came to around £110. This was good value, in my opinion.

The service is understated but warm and the decor and ambience relaxing.

A truly gastronomic experience and a wonderful birthday meal.

Went for a birthday meal with my son. We were a large party of approx 16. The staff did well with the large number. Food was excellent. Also excellent children's menu. Staff were attentive and friendly. Prices are good. I would thoroughly recommend this place.
To answer some of the negative comments: this restaurant is obviously trying to move on from it's previous "local pub" identity. Therefore why would they want to serve pub grub?

I visited the restaurant today for the first time - had a great meal and found the staff really hospitable.
I didn’t want the Beef, Duck or Hake roasts that were on offer so requested that the Chicken on the specials board be made into a roast dinner - this was no trouble and it turned out to be one of the best Sunday dinners I’ve had in the area for months.
Couldn’t believe the ‘3 courses for £18’ deal!
