History is replete with one society taking over the wonders of a previous society and incorporating them into their own. This is such a marvelous example with a beautiful church sitting on top of one of the largest pyramids in the world.

Every visitor in Cholula must take a look at the archeological place and the tunnels undernieth the pyramid and church. This is the biggest pyramid in terms of extension and volume in the world.

Once you buy a ticket, you begin by walking through the tunnels beneath the pyramid. There is no clear signage down there, which is a bit confusing because there are different turnoffs. Anyway, we just kept walking to the end of each tunnel and eventually exited to the outside through glass doors. Again, no signs. Once outside, you just go to the right and start climbing up to the church at the top. There are bathroom signs outside the church leading back down the hill... but no bathrooms. It made for a fun half hour walking up to the top and enjoying the scenery.

We visited Cholula recently with out tour group. We were told how this is the largest pyramid in the world. Not your typical Mexican pyramid but most definitely a must visit place. After you purchase your tickets you start the tour going underneath the pyramid in tunnels built by the archaeologists and come out on the other side. A fairly long tour of over a couple of hours and quite a bit of walking. Near the end of the tour you have an opportunity to climb a section of the pyramid. Lastly there is a market place for souvenirs, then we had the opportunity to pitch in a few pesos and view the Danza de los Voladores, Dance of the flyers, what an afternoon.

Last October 2017 the church atop the pyramid was closed by the earthquake. Now in February 2018, we climbed the stairs and trail to the top. Well worth the effort. The church is magnificent and the views outstanding.
