Owner description: An area in the south side of the Petrified Forest National Park.

I knew of the petrified forest before we went, however the Rainbow Forest houses a small museum of Triassic dinosaurs! As a dinosaur enthusiast, I was pleasantly surprised to find this small museum, complete with 'be a paleontologist' activity for small children, attached to the gift shop.

The real attraction is the petrified forest, which entails walking outside. While the trails are paved with stairs, it would not be easily navigated by a stroller or wheelchair. We are not hikers but managed to walk the loops to see the sights. Make sure to pick up a trail brochure, because the trail is self-guided.

This is the best place to see large petrified wood in the park. A couple of easy walking trails leads to many many logs. Great place to take small children.

We stayed in Snowflake, AZ overnight as the trail head from the South is nearest. Stopped outside at the store and purhased a beautiful piece of howlite before entering the park and Rainbow Museum for information. Trails are easy to hike, but do bring water, a hat and sun screen. Saw many folks with dogs in tow, so pet friendly also. Petrified wood was just beautiful, I poured a little water over some of the wood to magnify the colors.
