Sadly, I didn't have the chance to stay at the Henry Derby House itself, since it was booked, but I was taken off my feet when the owners so kindly offered me another acomodation. The place was beyond my expectations! As for the Henry Derby House itself, it's simply beautiful, warm and very inviting! It doesn't feel like a hotel, but like staying over with friends. Everybody is just so nice and friendly! Breakfasts are rich and delicious, with plenty of everything that's good - specially bagels! And you can have them with everything! I know, I had them that way! - and plenty of fresh fruit, cereal, muffins... where those muffins? They were rich and delicious and I had no time to learn their proper names, so enchanted I was by them!
Now, on a more practical note, the house is located in a very convenient place. It's quite close to a seven-eleven, but also close to the post office, Essex street and Derby street. You are at walking distance from tons of place to stop by for a good meal, close to a comic book store (for those to whom that's important), quaint witchy stores and incredibly close to the Witch House, which you must visit while here. It's also at an easy walking distance from the train station, so Boston is just a jump away, and pretty much around the corner of the beautiful Chestnut Street, and you MUST go check that out.
One thing is for sure, I'm visiting again!
This was our first time in a B and B and we loved it. The location is within easy walking distance to all of Salem's attractions. The hosts are second generation owners of the Henry Derby House and they gladly share the history of their beautiful establishment. We stayed in the Yellow Room which was beautifully decorated. Breakfast was muffins, fruit, cereal and yogurt and we also enjoyed warm pumpkin waffles with syrup. Warm, welcoming and relaxing, we could not have asked for more!!
Stayed the week before halloween and it was terrific. Peg's son and wife are now the innkeepers at the Henry Derby House and they are absolutely wonderful. They made us feel like we were home. They have kept the place exactly the same with the same warm atmosphere. The breakfast was good. And our room an absolute delight. Their assistant, Allison, is a delight and can give you the history if the house. Salem Trolley both the day and the Tales and Tombstone tours were fun. Loved the staff who were outgoing and informative. Salem is always fun all year, but during Halloween is special. Can't wait to go again.
The location is splendid, the rooms are beautiful, and the owners are an absolute dream. A delicious breakfast was coupled with engaging discussion about both the resident house spirit, Sarah, and the fascinating history of the area. Not to mention the absolute wonderful suggestions made by the owners as to where to dine. A truly magical experience for any personage wishing to feel at home in Salem. We will definitely be coming back!
