Due to sightseeing, we were always eating late. Most places to eat on the Riverwalk close at 10 or 11 PM - even on weekends. It was hard finding a late night place that also had good food and a nice ambiance. We were very lucky to find Esquire, which we saw was recommended by travel channel online. Highly, highly recommend this place. Oldest bar in San Antonio with the longest wooden barter in Texas. Drinks are great and food is even better! Ketchup and mustard are made in house and are amazing. Late night menu has a good selection, and it was hard to come to a decision - but we enjoyed the bison burger and jalapeño bean burger. Fries were fresh and also made in house. Wish we would have found this place sooner, as we would have come back a few more times to enjoy the other things on the menu. I would've taken pictures, but was too busy eating the delicious burger instead. You must eat here if you are looking for places to dine at on the Riverwalk!!!

The history of this place alone makes it a must stop. The cocktails are well made and the atmosphere enjoyable! We visited twice during our stay!

My first visit to the Esquire Tavern was an excellent experience and prompted a half a dozen more trips there in last few years. Its dark and mysterious and well located on the riverwalk, accessible from the street above or the water below. I can best vouch for the service, which has always been good. You must have a reservation to eat here or you will wait forever. In the summer heat the restaurant is sometimes unbearably hot, due to lack of adequate cooling. The menu is creative and balanced with simple and complex dishes. Our favorite has been the "Chicken Fried Ribeye;" but, it seems to be different with each visit. It was too fatty one time and too spicy the next time. The appetizers are excellent. The cocktails are very well made and the list of fine spirits is worthy of respect - I recommend the old Rye Whiskeys. I'll probably venture out to some other places before going back, just to get more variety.

To get to the inside of the tavern you do have to walk up a stairwell. When we got there the wait was going to be 45 minutes so we opted to just have a drink at the bar. They have lots of unique drink options. The inside of the restaurant is really cool with the decor. They have a really long wooden bar. The ceiling was really cool. This definitely seems to be a popular spot to go. What drew me here was the fact that it's the oldest bar on the river. I would come back here.

Oldest bar in San Antonio. Cold beer and the best burger I ever had. Jazz band played. Good service. Must go.
