We visited Sunset Crater on the way back to Sedona after spending the morning at Walnut Canyon (also highly recommended). I had never seen a volcano up close and had no idea what to expect. Shortly after driving in past the visitor center, there appears this massive lava flow just off the main road and you start to get the idea that this is going to be a very different experience! You can hike right into the lava flow, which is otherworldly, and then after a short drive, there's a stop with 3-4 trailheads--all quite short and most of them paved. Each provides a different glimpse at the massive geologic forces at work and the different kinds of lava and ash the volcano produced.
We ran out of time and didn't get to visit the Wupatki National Monument, so we will have to come back!
