We visited Sunset Crater on the way back to Sedona after spending the morning at Walnut Canyon (also highly recommended). I had never seen a volcano up close and had no idea what to expect. Shortly after driving in past the visitor center, there appears this massive lava flow just off the main road and you start to get the idea that this is going to be a very different experience! You can hike right into the lava flow, which is otherworldly, and then after a short drive, there's a stop with 3-4 trailheads--all quite short and most of them paved. Each provides a different glimpse at the massive geologic forces at work and the different kinds of lava and ash the volcano produced.

We ran out of time and didn't get to visit the Wupatki National Monument, so we will have to come back!

The lava beds look like a giant farming plow went through the beds and plowed them up into furrows. The hikes along the area of the lava beds offer options for all levels from very easy to difficult.

It’s good that they stopped hikes up the actual volcano as it appears mostly untouched now. The black lava rock is everywhere, and it’s interesting to see how it has changed in size in the various areas.

It was fun to walk around in the lava rock. It is not everyday you get to experience that. Something I am sure the kids will remember.

Wow! These places just come out of no where and they are well worth the views and a few minutes of time. Nice rest stops and place for a break!

Although the crater can no longer be climbed, it is amazing how the lava flow from over 950 years ago looks so current. The area around the crater looks like a fine black sand with no growth in some areas and only minimal growth in other areas. This is a prime example at how mother nature can take a long time to reclaim the earth and provide growth opportunities for plants.
