We enjoyed a quiet lunch here on a Monday afternoon. Great steak salad, chicken salad, soups, along with Bloody Mary's, iced tea, wine. The A-K membership discount means that the value is even greater for Albright-Knox members and their friends. But it is not expensive to begin with so drop by when visiting the museum.

Restaurants associated with galleries and museums can be a mixed bag. Too often, their limited hours do not allow for high-end professional staffing and they tend to be a side venture for the host organization.

Not so at the Albright-Knox Gallery! The AK Cafe is just off the main floor not far from the entrance in a large room with a full wall of windows looking out onto the interior courtyard. There's a bar at one end with a half dozen stools and a couple of dozen tables throughout the room and along the windows. This makes the space bright and airy and a perfect adjunct to an impressive gallery.

It's also busy. Clearly popular, we made reservations after we got there and were seated soon after the appointed time. Turnover is not rapid. We saw many tables where people were conducting business or meeting friends on an outing.

Since they were busy, it took a few minutes for our server to arrive. Overall, food came about 30 minutes after we sat down. And, here's the important part—it was delicious!

I ordered the French Onion Burger, medium rare, and it was excellent. This was a fairly rare treat for me and I was very pleased with the outcome. The others in our small family group enjoyed the Quiche, the Chicken Cordon Blue Salad and a Turkey Panini. Reports around the table were consistent with mine—very nicely done. The bill for four of us was $53.00 plus tax…more than the neighborhood burger bar…but quite reasonable considering the quality, quantity and setting.

By the way. You can eat here without paying museum admission. Two of our party came just for lunch and had no problem just accessing the restaurant.

AK Cafe in Buffalo's Albright-Knox Art Gallery is open for lunch most days, but is only open for dinner once a month, on "First Friday" each month, when the museum offers free admission all day, and jazz in the evening in the cafe. There is a very limited menu of entrees - usually one seafood dish and one beef dish, but there are many salads and sandwiches available. It's a fun evening, if your a jazz aficionado.

Located within the Albright-Knox Gallery, this restaurant offers very good light lunches. I had chicken-lentil soup and an avocado, cheese and tomato sandwich; my wife had a salad. We were pleased, also with the coffee. Recommended.

Small but fantastic menu. The chocolate lava cake is what baby cocoa beans dream of growing up to be. Wonderful! And the cafe looks out into a courtyard with interesting sculpture, plus there are a couple of installations right in the dining room as well.
