I've stayed at the Halekulani a few years ago and this place is definitely better. It also compares very well to the Royal Hawaiian. It has a much more private relaxing feel of a resort. It has a real beach, gym and spa, and you don't see crowds all over the place or walk right into Waikiki. The eating options are also better. Our kid got up at 4am from jetlag the first day and my wife and him took a nice walk out on the beach; someone from the breakfast buffet gave him a croissant to hold him over till meal time. We had two connecting rooms at the end of a hall overlooking the golf course; they were beautiful large rooms, one with a terrace, and there was no need to have something overlooking the ocean or the dolphins -- I'm not at all sure we would have liked one of the lanai suites at ground level which would not have been private. The bathroom amenities were very good. The hotel's gym is great and open 24 hours; I really liked the sauna area which was also very private. The hotel is fairly compact and it is easy to get around it, and this also made us feel comfortable to have our 9 year old son run around on his own and not worry so much. Peter, the pool manager, was really nice to us; he gave our kids surfing lessons and swam out with them to this little island they wanted to go to and outfitted them with special shoes to avoid getting hurt from the rocks; he charged us for one hour and was out with them for two. He was also a really good instructor. My massage at the spa was in the top 20%. They also have a treatment for sunburn which is useful. Despite using lots of sunscreen, I got real red. The surf in summer was beautiful and swimming in the ocean was a real delight. The breakfast buffet is excellent; dinner at the hotel's signature restaurant was also excellent with a particularly good tuna. I was upset at the corn soup being something like 5 spoonfuls in a plate for about $15; i mentioned it but they didn't bring me any more. They have a buffet in their restaurant on weekends but it didn't include a single cooked vegetable, which is a problem for people who want vegetables without meat or shellfish. I didn't see any of the beautiful mangoes or avocados at the hotel like I saw in the nearby farmer's market. Basically, the hotel doesn't showcase the local produce. The weakest area of food in the hotel is the pool area, which could use a more expansive menu. We enjoyed the lobby entertainment on the weekend, particularly the piano bar. The hotel's kid camp evening program was better than most hotels, with interesting arts and crafts and a crabbing night adventure. Our son brought his crab back to our room to spend the night and mistakenly let it loose at the breakfast buffet; an alert waiter caught it just before a riot broke out after a diner noticed. The hotel is conveniently located to Diamond Head; we were able to do an early morning hike using a taxi from the hotel entrance. The business center was also good and the hotel worked well with us when our flight to Tokyo was delayed 24 hours and we had to deal with it. My mistake was not consulting with the hotel concierge before booking a private tour of Pearl Harbor through another company over the internet. We paid a lot of money for what we got and it might have paid to do it through the hotel. We didn't do the dolphin adventure; we've done that elsewhere. The pool itself is a bit small but overall we were happy that the pool area was calm and the beach was a place you could certainly find a lounge anytime on this private beach. Compared to the hullabaloo we saw on Waikiki this was not comparable. The rates and prices here were good value for money with room rates in summer being quite reasonable especially with Amex Fine Hotel & Resort benefits thrown in.

My daughter and I stayed at The Kahala Resort July 2-July 5th after staying at Aulani on the other side of the island. The Kahala is a very nice place to stay. It is quiet and remote away from the crowds of Waikiki. We had a room on the bottom floor facing the golf course. This area was very quiet and the room was quite spacious. Our stay came with the breakfast buffet that was very good to start our day with. The staff at the resort were very friendly and professional. The parking attendants were awesome. The beach was very nice and we got chairs with no problem. The beach was never crowded when we went. We took the complementary shuttle to downtown which was great so we didn't have to drive and deal with parking. The only complaint that I had was that when I booked the room I reserved a 2 bed room which they said they didn't have any available. They did provide a roll away bed which was ok but I was disappointed. Other than that everything was wonderful and I would recommend staying at The Kahala Resort and I would stay there again.

Without a doubt, the Kahala is the standard by which all others may hope to achieve. The rooms are sensational, very spacious with great amenities. The staff are exceptional. They all go out of their way to be caring and prompt. For my money, this is best hotel on Oahu. No crowds, no resort fees, superior service. Can't beat it.

My family of four stayed here and had the most wonderful time. The room was fantastic, the beach was spectacular, the pools were lovely, the dolphin experience was amazing, the restaurants, Hoku, Pulmeria Cafe and the Veranda all were excellent.

Room Tip: All rooms are great. When you have a ground floor room you can walk right out to the beach, restaurant and pools.

Absolutely loved this hotel. Location was perfect. Sunsets were out of this world. Service was impeccable. Rooms were large and very clean. Dolphin quest is located at this hotel so your family can enjoy watching the Dolphins play. Offered great gym that was accessible 24 hours a day. Every aspect of this hotel was perfect from the valet parking, concierge, buffet breakfasts to the free photography session. Would absolutely recommend and stay at this hotel again.
