Owner description: Iolani Palace, the official residence of Hawaii’s monarchy, is a marvel of opulence, innovation and political intrigue. Meticulously restored to its former grandeur, this National Historic Landmark in downtown Honolulu tells of a time when their Majesties, King Kalakaua, who built the palace in 1882, and his sister and successor, Queen Liliuokalani, walked its celebrated halls. Today, you can enjoy one of the most spectacular living restorations in all of Polynesia and immerse yourself in Hawaii’s royal heritage. E komo mai! Welcome!

This is where Queen Liliuokalani was imprisoned by James Dole who overthrew the monarchy because he wanted the land for his own capitalistic and selfish gains.

Our tour guide, Sally, was so knowledgeable and interesting. The palace has been restored beautifully and is an important part of our American history.

This is located in the downtown. Very few places to see in the downtown, this is one of them. Good place to know history.

We took the audio tour, which has the advantage of being able to go at one's own pace and talk about what you're learning with your family members. The disadvantage is that there is not a docent leading the tour to answer questions one might have. The audio tour is digital, done well, and easy to navigate. Our grandchildren were quite interested in seeing the royal jewels!

It was quite poignant to visit the rooms where Queen Lili'uokalani was held captive when she was overthrown by American businessmen. The quilt she worked on during this time is quite lovely. I think most people will learn things they never knew about modern Hawaiian history and the royal family.

Be sure to plan plenty of time to find parking!

So much history to learn and especially if linked with a visit to the Bishop Museum (I'd recommend you do the meseum first) there is so much to appreciate about the history of the Republic of Hawaii!
