Let me start by saying the reviews listed here are not all for this particular cruise. The Star of Honolulu offers a Sunset dinner cruise where you can choose the 1, 3 or 5 star dinner. That cruise is aboard the Star of Honolulu (which also offers whale watching tours). I've done the whale watch (reviewed March, 2012) and Sunset dinner cruise (reviewed May, 2013) and loved both. As the Starlite Waikiki fireworks cruise is run by the same company I had high expectations. I chose this cruise instead of the Sunset dinner cruise to watch the fireworks as the sunset cruise returns to port prior to the fireworks and doesn't leave enough time to get to a good vantage point to watch them.
The Starlite Waikiki was by far the worst activity I've spent money on in Hawaii. If I could give it 0 stars I would but as is- the only star is for the fireworks display which is actually put on by the Hilton and has nothing to do with this cruise. The boat was small and cheap feeling. It was raining the night we took the cruise and there were major leaks on the upper level- not drops but running like faucets. The dinner seating is bench style, the engine was incredibly loud and drowned out all other noise- including your conversations. And the power kept failing during our cruise. The ship is also pretty small and rocks A LOT. Also my husband is in the Navy and was pretty bothered by the fact that they didn't give any type of safety briefing. The dinner plates were dirty and the food was awful. They also ran out of dessert so we didn't get to try that, though by that point we'd had enough. You get a welcome Mai Tai but otherwise drinks (including soda or juice) are for a charge- $4 for soda or juice, $8 for alcoholic drinks. And to top off our night, the captain missed the pier as we were pulling in- not once, not twice, but 3 times!
This dinner cruise is not an inexpensive excursion and I was pretty appalled by how bad it was. Hawaii's main business is tourism and for the most part they do it well. I am not usually disappointed in the least. But this cruise was seriously pathetic. I would recommend upgrading to the Sunset Dinner cruise which is not much more expensive but the ship, food and entertainment were superb! I am truly shocked this cruise is offered by the same company and in my opinion it should just be shut down.
