“Challenging but rewarding hike for 60 year old”

I hiked up to Vernal Fall and then Nevada Falls using the Mist Trail going up and the John Muir trail coming back. This makes for a 7 mile loop trail. I recommend doing it this way and not the other way around. You can, of course, go up and back using the Mist Trail, and if you do it is only 6 miles, but I wouldn't want to navigate the rocks going downhill on the Mist Trail. I'm 60 and completed the loop in about 5.5 hours, including time to have lunch at the top. It is an extremely beautiful hike.

We did the John Muir trail at Happy isles which was about 6 miles with a 2000 feet elevation change. Was an amazing walk where you see the falls from lots of different views and the top and bottom. The best advice I can give is when you get to the start of the loop head to Vernal falls first.
This is much steeper and near the falls the steps get really wet and lots of people heading down them were really struggling. After the Nevada falls it's a very gentle switch back descent which really suited our non hiker legs!

This is the most hiked trail in the park. You start at Haps Isles Nature Center. You hike up the Vernal falls. There is a bridge before the falls that goes over the river. Then there is the last clear drinking water just past the bridge along with fish toilets. Then as you go up take the left turn to go up the mist trail. That takes you to the top of Vernal Falls. Do not leave you foo untended as the squirrels are on the lookout for food here. Then you hike up Emerald Pool then Silver Apron of water. You keep going then cross a bridge to the other side of the river. Then soon you see Nevada Falls. The last part of that trail is a little bit away from the falls. At the top there are places get a good view from the top. For the way down cross over the bridge above the falls and go down the other way. As you travel on this trail you will have great views of Nevada Falls. This is a safer way down than the Mist trail and it is not as steep or wet. Enjoy the magical hike.

First wear appropriate footwear as in a hiking shoe or boot. The Park spends far to much time helping people who are not prepared than the should. Views are wonderful. Sit up top and have lunch and enjoy the views.

We passed Vernal Falls on the way. It was August, but both has dramatic flow so the falls were spectacular. We hiked to the base of Nevada and then returned by the Muir Trail. It took this pair of 63-year olds 6 hours to do the hike. We were on the trail by 9am (note the age :-) and I strongly suggest not starting later. It was mid week. There were people all the way, but when the loop connected back we had a mob scene for the final mile.
Suggestion: if you make it past Vernal Falls and are going to hike back on Muir, continue a little further to the base of Nevada -- small price for a spectacular view.
Pro tip: there are many signs about taking sufficient water. Heed them. We took a quart each from the last water and more would have been better -- we nursed it fine, but took care.
