My wife and I recently enjoyed a fantastic long weekend at Cape Weligama and wanted to share a few comments about our experience.

The setting, design, food, facilities and, most impressively, service all joined to create a beautiful hotel to which we hope to return. A few highlights: Rasika, the butler for our room, who took great care to make sure we were comfortable throughout our stay, and did so with skill and his friendly attitude; the food at the various hotel restaurants, with our favorite being the Sri Lankan breakfast that Rasika delivered to our room; the beach next door, which featured stunning coral reefs for snorkeling and large, consistent waves for body-boarding (or surfing for those who know how) with Gaurawa and Oska, from the hotel’s dive shop; an afternoon run through the surrounding towns and fields with David, also from the dive shop; the views down the rocky shoreline to the east and over the ocean to the south; and the whistling tune played by the red baker’s tuk-tuk that delivers bread to the area a few times daily. To wrap up our weekend trip, the hotel organized a tour of Galle on the drive back to the airport in Colombo.

Congratulations to Michele (the manager), Rasika and the rest of the staff on creating a fabulous destination.

We really enjoyed our stay at cape weligama . The setting with ocean view is spectacular . Our room was spacious, modern and well appointed. The food was delicious particularly the Sri Lankan buffet. The only thing which I feel was not up to the very high food standard was the assortment of cakes for the afternoon tea. This can definitely be improved.
The staff was friendly and helpful.
Altogether we had an amazing time , we will definitely recommend this resort to our friends and family.

We arrived dusty from our safari and found Cape Weligama to be a haven where we could be thoroughly spoilt with high tea on our verandah, pre dinner drinks, whatever we wished for really, all delivered by our wonderfully helpful butler, Rasiki. Nothing was too much trouble. Our Ocean View room was beautiful with a pool shared by just three villas. There is a stunning Moon Pool as well. Dinning outdoors with cliff top ocean views was delightful too. We enjoyed the Spa and the high level of service. We stayed three nights and it was hard to leave. We visited Galle and went whale watching.

My wife and our two sons ages 10 & 12 just visited the Resort for a short 2 night stay over the CNY Holiday. We have visited other resorts in Indonesia, Thailand, Malaysia and the Maldives and the experience here compares well with Five star resorts in Bali, Langkawi, the Maldives, Phuket and Koh Samui.

Our butler, Indika, was superb and went out of his way to make sure we were always taken care of. We thought the food was excellent and the local Sri Lankan cuisine in particular was delicious. The all inclusive nature of the resort also worked well. Given its ownership through the Dilmah Group the tea was great.

As other reviewers have noted the beach is down the hill and is a public one. There is no beverage service on the beach but the dive center has brand new gear. We snorkeled from shore and enjoyed it although the coral is still recovering from the Tsunami and there were not many fish. The surfing looked great although we don't surf ourselves.

We had some issues with the car pickup in Colombo and were refunded the charge in full without asking. The driver on the way back to the airport, Harish, who works for the resort was an excellent guide as well and spent an entire day with us at stops in Galle and in Colombo. The first driver was from an independent firm and was friendly and knowledgeable but had never been to the resort before and so we relied on Google Maps to eventually find our way.

We thought the semi-private pool was very nice. We used that pool and the two common pools and none were busy although the rooms were occupied to near capacity.

We were a bit surprised there was no shop as we would have probably bought some tea to take home and stocked up on sun lotion.

As the resort is new I expect the transportation issues will be sorted out soon. We are keen to come back for a longer stay and thought it was relaxing and quite impressive. If you are going to spend all day on the beach, this is not the best place, but if you are happy to be pampered at the pool and do the occasional beach activity, this is an excellent choice of resort. Weligama itself is a bustling a vibrant fishing community with where nature is not too far away - we spotted monkeys (gibbons?) and a few kingfishers and kites. Apparently seasonal blue whale watching is possible too.

The staff is very friendly and should be commended for making the experience enjoyable and relaxing.

The resort location is about 3hours drive away from Colombo airport when you use the newly constructed Southern Expressway. Driving back to Colombo from our too short a visit, we stopped at Galle for a walk around the fortress. Galle is less than 45mins away on the coastal road. Cape Weligama provides good access to historical/cultural sights, cinnamon plantations, local community and also water sports.

This was a great place to accelerate de-stressing within a 2-day period, however, a minimum 4-night stay would have been preferable if we had the time.

We were able to visit The Fortress for lunch on our last day, as well as pass by Aman Galle. The two were booked up and that is how we ended up at Cape Weligama. The three hotels offer completely different experiences and Cape Weligama will suit the luxury topical getaway traveller best. We hope to return with friends to this lovely cliff-top resort on a second trip to Sri Lanka in the near future.

This is hyped as the most luxurious new hotel in Sri Lanka but we felt is was slightly lacking in a few respects. It has the most amazing setting and has stunning views but as it is set high above the beach it is not really a 'beach hotel' so not for people who like to spend a lot of time walking in the sand. The accommodation is very well appointed and laid out in sets of three villas which share a pool - great for us as we occupied the only villa of the three so had the pool to ourselves. I am not sure how I would feel about sharing the pool with the occupants of two other villas. However, there is also beautiful and huge moon shaped main infinity pool with many staff to attend to your every whim.
The food was disappointing on our first evening (surprising for a Relais and Chateaux hotel) but we had a private BBQ in our garden overlooking the sea on our second evening which was superb and way beyond our expectations served by our butler and prepared by two chefs in situ. Overall, the hotel was rather lacking in atmosphere - perhaps they should arrange a cultural show or have local musicians to play in the evening. The hotel has huge potential but felt that it has a bit of a way to go to achieve proper Relais and Chateaux status.

Dear CityTraveller45
Thank you very much for taking the time to post your honest review of our resort. As discussed during your stay the first night you were here we had difficulties in the dinner service which resulted in possibly somewhat lower quality than what we are used to serve, as you well noticed during your second evening meal, personally prepared for you. We appreciate every constructive review as it helps us move forward and become better every day, so thank you again and please come back to see that we have! Until then, safe travels!
Michele
