This is a loving place in Ella. White House host in Dalhousie recommend. Rooms are tidy and clean. There is hot water and wifi. Most of the time switched off but it works. Ashoka and her little daughters running this place where your laundry is done, cooking classes are held and scooter are rented on a daily basis. Ashoka introduces you into the area of Ella and what you can do there. You can even accompany the daughters watching sri lankan television. We did the cooking class. Very authentig. Indeed, worth the 2000SLR per person and 6 curries in total plenty of food to eat. Way to much for 2 people. Unfortunately, Ashoka did not keep the rest of our cooked curries we couldn't eat the night before. She did the laundry not per kilo but counting the single pieces of clothes. I recommend making prices more transparent through a price list or so. In the end we were a bit surprised about the total bill. Basically Ashoka was so nice chatting to we lost focus on our expenses during our 2 day stay. After all, it is a comfortable place to stay at.

Room Tip: Ella is small. Every hotel and guest house is in range within the spots of Ella.

The guesthouse business is booming in Ella, with a lot of new places sprouting up, but the Rock Face is something truly special. The hostess, Ashoka, is one of the most warm and friendly people we met in Sri Lanka, and her hospitality is truly fantastic. We had a beautiful room with a comfortable bed, hot shower, a strong mosquito net, and many pots of the excellent local tea on the pleasant, breezy veranda. It was the perfect place to relax when the daily mists and rain came up the hill. Ashoka is such a great cook that we had breakfast and dinner every day here; for only 2000 Rs she also provided a fun cooking class.

Location is also ideal, being just a couple minutes' walk up the hill from the main road - convenient and also sheltered from the traffic noise. I can't imagine a more perfect base for the many outdoor activities in this gorgeous village, and Ashoka was very helpful with planning our adventures. We contacted Ashoka by email to reserve our room at therockfaceella@gmail.com , but she can also be found at the Scooter Rental shop by the bus stop.

This is a lovely place on top of but close to Ella, wifi and a made to order restaurant. Quiet and full of fresh air. Ashoka calmly asked if I had a room and was so pleasant I said yes without the usual questions … how much…. and i was not disappointed. Big room big 4 poster bed and mosquito net, nice washroom, a patio and dinner area. I wanted Sri Lankan curry and rice and got a great meal. Warm friendly and a good safe feeling.

We arrived off the (late running) early afternoon train into Ella intending to look up a few places to stay. Ashoka approached us saying her guest house was just 5 minutes away, so we took a look. It was perhaps 10 minutes from the train station – 5 minutes to walk to the Bank of Ceylon on the main road in Ella, and then 5 minutes for me to haul myself up the hill to the Rock Face. (you can also take a tuk tuk if you have heavy bags).
There are just three rooms here – one inside the house and two others with a direct onto the veranda entrance. We took the double room that opens onto the veranda (we stayed three nights in the end at 2000 LKR a night). It’s a great big room, with a full size mosquito net. Huge bathroom with a hot water shower (a little dribbly sometimes, but glorious to have hot water). You can’t book the Rock Face on the web, but do call ahead if you want a room, you won’t regret it! (072 527 5363 or therockfaceella@gmail.com )

The 15 feet x 50 feet veranda is a wonderful spot to sit – there are tables and chairs and also a sofa and chairs – it rained for 24 hours while we were in Ella and it was a lovely spot to sit out, while not getting wet.
Pots of tea were plentiful during our stay and we took Ashoka’s cooking class with one other guest – for 1500 LKR each it’s a fabulous insight into Sri Lankan cooking (be sure to try grating the coconut yourself!) and never forget how lucky you are when you open a bag of rice at home!! The cooking class alone will make you appreciate the time and effort that goes into the dinner (and breakfast) that you’ll eat in Sri Lanka.

Breakfasts were also superb – string hoppers, hoppers AND milk rice all were fab and this was the best Dhal curry we have had in Sri Lanka.

The internet connection here is the best we experienced in 30 days in the country and we were able to have our only Skype video conversation with home using it!

Ashoka will also help you with a map of local attractions and directions on how to get to places – using local buses and paying only the correct rate for tuk tuks and taxis. She is an incredibly friendly and open host. We were lucky enough to staying in the run up to Christmas and helped her family put up the “Christmas Tree, which is a fab memory to have of a wonderful place to stay.

My partner and I came to Rockface on the recommendation of my brother and his partner who had stayed there a few weeks prior and enjoyed their experience. The rooms and bedding were clean and fresh. Bathrooms are attached to all three bedrooms and have hot water. Ashoka, the host mother is a warm and generous woman who is very hard working and welcoming! Ashoka will assist with anything that you require - washing our filthy clothes, preparing meals and warm pots of tea, providing maps, recommendations for places to go - the correct/local prices to pay etc... We did an amazing cooking class with Ashoka one night and made 7 different authentic Sri Lankan curries in her kitchen on a wood and gas stove for only 1500 LKR which is half of what is charged down on the main road. Easy access to all the beautiful sights in Ella and the surrounding area.
