As is stated a number of times around this museum the Submarine Service was for many years the forgotten relation of the Navy whilst performing sterling work for UK defence. Starting with a tour around HMS Alliance a post war submarine in dry dock, you are guided through this vessel by veterans who actually spend time on these. You get a real taste of life on board and see the real mechanics of the submarine. After this went into the museums which covered from the very first submarine Holland I which is now kept in a controlled atmosphere through to the present day nuclear powered vessels. The place initially looked quite small but we ended up spending over four hours there. Only a small outside kiosk for food so if you do plan to eat here there are only minimal facilities. Plenty of free parking though so it's worth using this as a base and then getting the water taxi over to the main Dockyard in Portsmouth rather than paying high parking prices over there.

My Dad and I had a great day here, we also went along to the Explosives museum afterwards too. The tour through the submarine was brilliant, the guides full of interesting stories and facts. One of our guides had actually served on her and that kind of storytelling is just priceless. Really recommend this as part of all of the historic dockyard exhibits.

If you visit Portsmouth Historic Dockyard don't forget to go across to Gosport to visit the Submarine Museum. If you have the yearly ticket for the Dockyard then this is included in the price. If your out of season (before April) then catch the Gosport Passenger Ferry across and then a 15 minute stroll along the promenade to the base. You get a proper guided tour of a WW2 submarine which is very informative.

Great place , really well laid out and always so interesting, no matter how many times we visit. Staff always so enthusiastic about the history of the area and the exhibits.

Nice museum covers everything you need to know about past, present and future submarines. The guided tour on the submarine is very interesting and is tight and low in places, as you would expect in a Cold War era submarine.

My only negative was that on my particular tour there were several kids whom (IMO), were to young to appreciate the submarine tour, who’s chatting consistently made it difficult for us to hear the tour guide. Of course, the parents just let their little darlings continue and seemed oblivious to others around them.

Apart from the above, great museum and should certainly be on any persons Portsmouth itinerary.
