There aren’t too many options in Haltwhistle but this is the best of them. Great home style food and plenty of local bitters.

Great reviews on here but we had a very different experience! Asked if any tables, answered with a shrug, and a point to a tiny table by the bar. Asked for a menu, one pushed in our direction, got a drink from the bar, again poor service.

Really should have drank up and left but the plates around us looked nice so stayed. Ordered food, 50 minutes wait to a slight apology as busy, would be good if you were made aware a bit sooner, service poor again but those they knew by name and obviously regular were served pronto and cheerfully, we felt like an inconvenience. Food average, small portion for the price and most annoying was the table we were pointed to as the only table, turns out theirs seating in the back and it was half empty, very annoying. Needless to say next time we are in the area we will give our money to another pub / restaurant who put a little effort into the people giving custom! Disappointing.

We called into The Black Bull for some lunch and were immediately taken with the warm and friendly atmosphere. We had two dogs which were allowed inside the pub in the bar area. The staff were lovely, the food was delicious and we were even treated to a complimentary glass of prosecco, as it was Mother’s day. We will definitely be back to The Black Bull. Highly recommend this hidden gem.

We stopped off here on our way to Newcastle. A hidden gem , the staff were very friendly and helpful, the food was gorgeous and very good value for money. We will definitely be back. A lovely cosy place , wish I was not driving that evening, could of quite happily stayed there all night by the wonderful fire. Highly recommended
