We stayed with Bea and John for a 8 days in July. We had the most wonderful time. It was by far the best experience we had in Turkey or other places that we have visited in the past years.
We arrived in the evening, being welcomed with Bea's wonderful homemade Mezze and chilled wine on a candlelit terrace (five stars!). We immediately felt at home in their beautifully decorated cottage.
Next day, we woke up and got to see with how much love and attention to details they had restored this old house. The house and the garden are so much in tune and harmony, that you immediately forget about charging your Iphone or hunting for a signal. They provide Wifi at their own house next door, but we just felt like pulling the plug and getting off the grid. Wonderful.
Bea and John took us for a tour in the village in their pick-up truck accompanied by Bella, a dog so sweet that she cured my girlfriend from her dog anxiety. They showed us the old (Greek) village, and stopped at several places where one could enjoy a cold beer, or a good traditional Turkish meal. All their tips were wonderful. They have lived in the village for several years and being part of a lively community, they recommended places where the hosts share their love for this unique village.
Kayakoy is a wonderful place to spend a holiday. The abandoned village gives the place a dramatic feel, and nearby are magical places you can hike to, such as the monastery. There are a number of beautiful hiking trails around the village and lots more, easily reachable by car or dolmus. Hiking here is simply great. It sort of feels like California, but with a sea that you want to dive in every time you see it, warmer and calmer. We did some hiking, as July is a bit warm for hill climbing, but we will definitely return in spring or autumn, when the weather is milder. The region offers other outdoor activities such as boat / canoe renting, skydiving, and snorkeling.
Nearby are excellent beaches, such as Gemiler beach. Tip: if you park your car on the road just before Gemiler beach, you can walk to a small sandy and quiet beach.
For culture and history lovers, we recommend day trips to excavation sites of Lycian cities, where one can quietly sit on the steps of an ancient theatre without hordes of tourists, something that we have never enjoyed in Greece or Italy.
We recommend this place to anyone who wants to have an authentic experience and get a feel of the 'real Turkey', while being able to enjoy culture, hiking, beaches, and restaurants at the same time.
