This property is managed by Alejo, a warm Tico who is incredibly kind and accommodating. Alejo actually manages two properties: this one by the beach, and another one -- a restaurant and set of cabinas -- up the mountain about 15 minutes. We stayed at Alejo's Restaurant and Cabinas, which sits inland at about 1,200 feet elevation (just beyond the pueblo of Platinillo) so it is much cooler, typically 15-20 degrees cooler than the beach areas.

Alejo's restaurant is fantastic. His wife's chilero alone is worth the visit! It is a spicy sauce that absolutely elevates anything it touches. My favorite way to enjoy it was with breakfast: delicious, toothsome black beans, with fried eggs topped with the chilero make for an amazing start to the day. Add a cup or two of roasty Costa Rican coffee, and this is a breakfast my mind lingers back to regularly.

The inland cabinas are open and airy...and QUIET. If you are looking to unplug, this is the place to do it. Unless you've actually experienced it, getting away from the racy pace of daily life in the U.S. is unimaginably restorative. You don't realize how deluged you are by traffic noise and advertising messages and signage and TV and crowds -- until you escape from all of it. Life simply slows down. They call it Tico Time in Costa Rica, and we came to love it. The stress of daily living just melts away, and Alejo and his family are there to help you make that happen.

The cabinas are clean and comfortable. There are insect nets around the beds, but let's fact it: you're IN the rain forest -- this only adds to the charm. There is a full kitchen with refrigerator, and there's a washer and dryer. A nice swimming pool is just steps away, and the restaurant is right there on the property. The fresh seafood dishes are unbelievable, and the prices are ridiculously low.

Of course, when you yearn for the warmth and sun, the beaches are right down the mountain, just a short drive away. We loved the combination of sun and fun at the beach areas all around this part of Costa Rica, and then being able to retreat back to the cool and quiet of the mountain cabinas every evening.

The Pacific side of Costa Rica is very different than the Caribbean side, much calmer and relaxed, far less "touristy." So if you are seeking a true "getaway," you can't go wrong letting Alejo and his family help you escape.

Playa Luna is an attractive and well appointed, privately owned aparthotel, with elegant gardens, a large pool located in a secluded spot within 5 minutes walk of parque nacional marino ballena.
We had planned to stay only 2 nights and now we are staying a week and enjoying the location as a base to explore the coastal area.
The apartments are well maintained and kitted out with all the 'toys' you would hope for in a kitchen. There is wifi and laundry service too.
The owner/manager is Alejo. He is a Tica and is friendly and very helpful and gentle. Thank you for a very comfortable stay, Alejo.

My family and I stayed here for 5 days. We loved it! We had plenty of room and a full kitchen. The pool was big and had a nice shade to keep it from getting too hot. There was no daily service, but we liked it that way. The manager was very friendly, but did not speak much English, but we were able to communicate pretty good anyway. He washed and folded our clothes. The hotel has wireless internet which worked great with my laptop. From here we explored many beaches, waterfalls, and rivers. We ate lots of good food, from the many sodas and restaurants nearby. Overall, we really loved this place and would definitely stay there again and recommend it to others. My girls and I also loved all of the geckos that were everywhere, even in our room :)!
