We have visited Helmsley for many years as a family and a couple, spent money on each visit at Hunters for many years. It is not at the same level as previous years. The pies etc are not as good a quality as they used to be, taste old, not very fresh. Never used to question quality and taste here, but it is no where near as good as it used to be.

Hi CSYork

I am disappointed to read you didn’t think the pies were as fresh normal. The recipe is the same and no pie would be anymore than 18 to 24 hours old maximum, 95% baked that day.
It would be great if you could let me know when and which pies you purchased.

A phone call on such an occasion could have resolved the situation and helped us check stock immediately.

Kind regards

We vwere attracted to go into the shop by the window display of Yorkshire pasties. Inside it was an amazing food shop and ended up buying some vanilla slices (were were absolutely delicious ) as well as several other products, Would certianly recommend their produce

Called in today whilst holidaying in area. Have just finished eating the pulled pork pie in creamy cider sauce..... OMG it has to be the best pie I have ever eaten. ( and there have been a few !! ) Absolutely delicious with big chunks of pork and seasoned to perfection for my taste. Probably a good job I do not live in the area , as it would be far too tempting to resist , to the detriment of my waistband .

Hunters is one of the places in Helmsley that we go to for a lunchtime takeaway snack. They sell a good range of pies etc. I don't believe that they make their own, most of their range is from Yorkshire Baker in Malton but these are of good quality and value. On this visit my wife had a Cheese and Leek pasty and enjoyed it. I had a Yorkshire Pasty which was from Thirsk (can't remember exactly where) and it was good. I know Cornish people would be offended that Yorkshire pasties even exist but they are very different from the Cornish variety and I like both (although to be honest nothing beats a good Cornish Pasty in Cornwall).
In addition to the snacks they sell a great range of cheeses and other cold deli foods. On the first floor there is a very well stocked deli shop where you can buy good quality pasta, tinned and dried goods and a whole host of other things.
In general the prices are good and anyone who loves good food and cooking would enjoy a visit.

For any foodie it is a serious temptation to walk past and not buy. The range of pies, quiches, sausage rolls, cooked meats, cheeses etc is excellent. But the real treasure is upstairs where any aspiring Masterchef can find a range of store cupboard staples that would keep even Nigella happy. A real asset to the Helmsley foodscape!
