Duncurin and spouse were extremely fortunate to be on their second skiing holiday this season. We were also very fortunate in choosing the delightful town of Bad Hofgastein in the Gastein valley of Austria. This is a perfect destination for the skier but also, we suspect, in summer with excellent facilities and walks in some very pretty terrain. People are friendly and welcoming and we enjoyed our skiing, our walks and just wandering into local bars and shops.
Without doubt, skiing can be an expensive undertaking, so we were pleased to discover this nice hotel just in the main town. It is about a ten-minute walk from the main lift where we hired and stored our skis. The ski-rental shop also offered to store our boots on nice warmed racking at no cost. Please note the hotel has an excellent ski and boot room with the warmed loops that overnight will dry one’s boots ready for the day to come.
The hotel is warm, comfortable and friendly. Everyone we met was approachable and helped make our stay as fuss free as possible, whether it was in the dining room, reception or the maids who made up the rooms. Our room, a fairly basic one overlooking the town was clean and bright. En-suite was small but clean. Please note there won’t be much room in the shower for a tubby person. We had two single beds pushed together and Wi-Fi was excellent so much so that we were able to continue the online ‘boxed’ set we had been watching in the UK before departure. Storage was adequate with nice new units, wardrobes and shelves to store clothes, put away suitcases and retain the paraphernalia one needs for skiing. Please also note that although there is a lift, this stops between floors and wherever one’s starting point, some carrying of suitcases up and or down the half flight will be needed.
We booked half board and there is a comprehensive breakfast and a substantial evening meal included. Please note food is unashamedly Austrian with lots of meats, dairy, full fat and salt. Most nights the portion size was more than we could eat. The restaurant also has an A La Carte option for those who are not half-board and in this case, the menu options are much expanded. Please note too, that although the waiters are very happy to serve drinks, alcohol and hot beverages, there is no bar as such. There is a ‘chill room’ on the first floor but otherwise public space is lacking and most nights we wandered out of the hotel to find bars or just go for a walk. Please note, however, at this time of year it’s pretty chilly in the evening and the streets quiet. Also please note, that the bars are friendly and all within striking distance of the hotel but apart from one, which was wonderful but very tiny, all are smoking zones; something we had not seen in the UK for some years.
All in all, this hotel is a safe, friendly and excellent option for those on a budget. It does not have the polish and features of the larger or higher-starred establishments but neither does it have costs associated with such. Certainly, it was perfect for the two of us enjoying our second ski break. For those perhaps seeking a luxury break with the need for more options and facilities would be advised to look elsewhere but as regards value for money or bang for ski buck then this hotel makes for an ideal choice. With our thanks and regards.

Extremely friendly and helpful staff and the entire place is spotless. The food on half board basis was varied and delicious! As a vegetarian I frequently struggle abroad but not here, every dish was thoughtful and inventive! The only tiny downside was there is no bar area to meet friends on an evening but this really does not detract from the whole experience. There’s a great boot room for ski equipment and the whole place felt safe and secure; not that it needed to be as the town seems sleepy and trouble free!
I would recommend this hotel 100%
Thank you!!

Great hotel in a fantastic location. Hotel is right in the centre of the village and a short walk to the bus/cable car for skiing. Room was very clean and functional. Staff were friendly and helpful.

We just had bed and breakfast but ate in the hotel on 2 nights and the food was very good.

Loved this hotel and would definitely stay here again.

The room was spotlessly clean, comfortable beds and we had a little balcony to take some air and admire the views. The staff were helpful and friendly. We had breakfast and dinner in the hotel and every meal was lovely. The bus stops right outside the hotel so we didn't have to carry our skis and if you just want to stroll around the village you are right in the centre. I travelled with a group of friends who ski together every year and the only thing we missed was a nice bar area where we could all meet for a drink and a chat before dinner.

Room Tip: Some rooms have a bath (which I would have loved after a day skiing)

The hotel is very well located in the centre of the village. The room was a bit on the small side for two adults however the pleasant modern interior, comfortable bed and sunny balcony made up for it. The food was really good with 4 courses each night and breakfast was decent feast. The hotel is very clean, rooms cleaned every day, ski room was big with heated boot racks. The staff were awesome, very friendly and helpful, we would stay again. Enjoyed it all. As a side note our flight was late due to the snow in Glasgow so we did not arrive at the hotel until 12:00 am, the staff left us a cold meat, cheese and bread platter in the room and gave us a warm welcome.

Room Tip: The rooms all face the square which is lovely.
