We had three nights at Borneo Rainforest Lodge as part of a Sabah itinerary prepared for us by Sticky Rice Travel and without being melodramatic, it was one of the best three days we have ever spent! We stayed in a Premium Deluxe room (absolutely worth it - a gorgeous room and a stunning view of the rainforest) and were lucky enough to have AK as our private guide. AK was fantastic - he was incredibly good at spotting birds, animals, insects, frogs and so knowledgeable (and good at sharing his knowledge) about the forest and about Sabah. He made an already very good holiday spectacular. We also spent a fascinating afternoon with the environmental sustainability team (Mr Calixtus and Mr Faiz) who told us and showed us some of the ways in which the hotel is increasing the sustainability of its operations. I don't think their presentation is in the standard programme (AK helped to arrange as we were asking about it due to our professional interests), but it is highly recommended as not only is the work they are doing very interesting but they themselves are wonderful and inspiring ambassadors for the practicalities of sustainable tourism. I could write pages and pages about the delights of this gorgeous place - every staff member we interacted with was warm and helpful, the surroundings are unparalleled, the nature awe-inspiring, the food delicious, the accommodation absolutely beautiful and the overarching mission (to allow sustainable and educational access to virgin rainforest to tourists) so well executed. Congratulations to everyone involved in creating and running BRL - I will treasure the memories and hope that perhaps one day I can come again to this little piece of heaven!

Room tip: Premium Deluxe room is very very beautiful - well worth the extra

I stayed two nights at BRL in a standard lodge that was very nice, great size, clean although dim lighting if you’re a reader. The staff are friendly and welcoming.

The reception started off in Ladah Datu where a Covid RAT was required before entering the lodge, unexpected when turned up to the office.

Be prepared for the 2.5 hour bumpy off-road drive into the lodge, and keep watch for wildlife during the journey in/out.

The accommodation includes buffet breakfast, lunch and dinner, all which offer a large range of tasty food to cater for all taste requirements. The balcony for eating has stunning views of the rainforest and river below. Keep an eye out for movement in the trees opposite at any stage for primates.

The BRL is the perfect location to explore Danum Valley’s natural environment with many walks and wildlife on offer

This was our fourth accommodation in the jungle and was head and shoulders better than anything we had experienced to date. Eric the General Manager and his team have a great set up; all of staff from waiting staff to guides were highly professional and customer focussed. They genuinely were interested in our experience of the lodge and its facilities.

In terms of our accommodation we had a Jungle Room which was their entry level accommodation but nothing was basic about it from the complimentary nespresso coffee, hairdryer, torches, information book, lovely bathroom etc etc.

The food was amazing - ample choices and at each meal there were a couple of chefs’ stations cooking to order Asian and western food (pasta, satay, sliders, laska etc). The bar was amazing too and they made the best ever margaritas and very reasonably priced.

Our guide Messi was brilliant - very attentive, knowledgeable and great fun to be with. The standard of guiding here surpassed that in all the other lodges we visited; we particularly valued information on the flora and fauna and medicinal properties of the plants.

We enjoyed the night walking safari (and all of the other activities) and found inter alia snakes, frogs and spiders. Our guided walks were enjoyable and diverse and the guides with their walkie talkies were able to take us to locations where animals had been sighted. It was great that all our walks were in a small group of six guests.

The lodge is some 2.5 hours drive from Lahad Datu over sometimes uneven roads but even the drivers were on the look out for animal sightings and even managed to spot orangutans for us on journey back to Lahad Datu airport. This was our first experience of Primary Rainforest which has been untouched by logging.

Our introductory briefing and the information about the wildlife and the rainforest protection programmes was highly informative. We loved the lodges’ approach to sustainability.

We stayed for two nights and our only regret is that we didn’t stay longer. Would we return? Most definitely this is one very special place. Thank you Eric and the team for a truly memorable stay.

Room tip: Stay more than two nights - don’t bother buying leech socks in the U.K. buy them here.

Fantastic place. The main attraction here is the thick forest and sky touching trees. Wildlife is sparse and rare to see but you can enjoy the forest itself. Trails have lots of leeches so be prepared mentally if you are going for any trail. Trails are not suitable for children and elderly as they are inside thick forest and mostly uneven surfaces with bugs.

Choose Premium deluxe room with pool. Guide Ali is best and he spots animals at a far distance without binoculars.

Food is ok but not very appealing, can't expect more from the middle of the jungle.
Service is top notch and staff are well trained.
