THANK YOU CHEF JACK!

5.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 19 Aug 2023
Unique experience in the pristine rainforest. The details state it is air conditioned, but the upper windows are not and just have screens, which they told us is for the hot air to escape. The result was a warmer room which did not cool off sufficiently and a huge amount of mosquito bites overnight.

The best part was Chef Jack, who took the time and attention to provide meals for a restrictive diet. The pride he took in preparing the meals was humbling and his skills made our trip outstanding. Thank you Chef Jack! Wish I could take you home!

We stayed here for two nights in between two 5 night stays in 5 star hotels in the Kota Kinabalu area. The journey from KK took about 7.5 hours, but it is well worth it.

All the staff here are brilliant - very welcoming and helpful from the meeting at the airport to everyone at the lodge.

We stayed in one of the "basic" jungle rooms, but it was very comfortable. The buffet style food compared very well in terms of quality with the other hotels we stayed in in KK - i.e. very good indeed.

We had booked a private guide, which we thought was well worth it, although none of the non private groups seemed that big. Our guide was Sher Wood, who was excellent.

We saw 2 Orangutangs and lots of other wildlife - a big tick off the bucket list!

    Just do it!

We stayed at Borneo Rainforest lodge for part of our honeymoon and it exceeded our expectations. It was an incredible 4 days and we already would love to come back. Everything from the moment you get into the rainforest is 5 star; the staff go above and beyond to make your stay special and the food is excellent quality. It is a buffet style, however my husband and I were repeatedly surprised at the lack of flies or mosquitos around the area, everything was impeccably clean and kept on top of. You are always hydrated with water at every meal which is filtered and cold. The rooms are spacious and comfortable and with ac can be kept cool. You have to keep pinching yourself that you are in the middle of the rainforest and you have access to electricity, water and outstanding views! All the staff at the lodge are so kind and generous, and make an effort to have a conversation with you and talk about your day. Our guide, Manu was brilliant and we enjoyed our group and all the guided tours. We saw many animals, orang-utans, monkeys, bush babies, otters and elephants on our way out! It is so special to see these animals in their natural habitat. We couldn’t recommended the lodge highly enough and it was a memorable way to end our honeymoon.

This is a pricy rainforest stay but it is worth every cent. It is a safari stay in a rainforest. I kept thinking that every morning we have to trek a few hours into a jungle to see wild life. Finally I realized, that I am actually already in the middle of a primary forest. There is no need to trek long hours to go deep into the jungle, I am actually living in the jungle. That is the best thing. You go for morning, afternoon and night walk/treks and come back to the lodge and can wash up and relax in the lodge. The lodge is very comfortable with aircond, buffet (B,L,D) and wifi at the main lodge. Good food too.
This is a place to relax and unplug, so I am fine with no wifi at our chalet. If you need to do airline check in. Well, the Lahad Datu airport is so small, half of the passengers for our flight were from the Lodge. So you actually check in at the airport.
As I mentioned, this place is located in a primary forest. So you can hear and see wildlife at the lodge itself. We saw Sambar deer, red leaf monkey as we were walking back to our chalet. At the main lodge, we saw an orang utan.
Our guide Messi is a very experience guide who can spot a slow loris up on a tree in the dark at night and a civet and samba deer in the bushes during our night drive. He gave some valuable lessons on the some of the commonly found plants which are edible. We also saw leaf frogs and lotus that bloom at night. Million leg millipedes, hornbill, bulbul bird, pill millipede. Others saw moon rat. Heard gibbons.
Leeches are commonly found and you will have some of them attached to your pants and shoes. They are not poisonous, just a nuisance but and there is no need to panick about it. They are can be easily dealt with by just flicking them away.
All in all, it was a great experience for my family with teenagers. They loved it too being able to see the wildlife up close and for them to develop more appreciation for all conveniences of life back home. Also I like the idea that the Lodge is operated by locals and there is conservation evidenced by the presence of wildlife. The 2-3 hours ride on unpaved road is all part of the experience.

Room tip: Trekking shoes, leech socks or long sock over pants. Rain jackets and torch lights to explore around the lodge

While it’s a bit of a trek to get to the lodge, it’s worth it (30 minutes on good road, 2.5hrs on rough road). The lodge itself is beautiful and the cabins are nice. It’s important to remember that this lodge is in a rainforest so the struggle against mould and bugs is a constant battle for the lodge so you may notice this in the cabins. We were in jungle chalet 6. It was nice and comfortable. Note that the top area of the chalet is screened in but doesn’t have glass. This is on purpose so you can sleep to the sounds of the rainforest. The rest of the chalet has glass on the windows.

The food was tasty and they were easily able to accommodate my husband who is a strict vegetarian. All meals are buffet style but with stations for having certain dishes the way you want. The staff are incredibly helpful and nice. We loved our guide, Messi. He had a ton of knowledge and experience making our treks a great experience. There is one trek to coffin cliff that would be challenging for anyone who doesn’t move around much but as long as you’re mobile and let the lodge know in advance that you will need extra time to to the trek, you should be fine.

We saw a wide range of animals, birds and bugs - exactly what we were hoping for! A really unique and special place for those who are wildlife enthusiasts.

Room tip: Bring bug spray and make sure you are totally covered, socks, pants and long sleeves as well as a hat, when trekking in the rainforest.

Excellent accomodation in luxury room with spa overlooking river.
    Kept virtually insect free.
Outstanding guide for day and night walks.
Food diverse and interesting with good service.
Wine and cocktails a bit limited. Ran out of white wine and no ingredients for well earned daiquiri but remedied next day.

Room tip: Trails suitable for age 8+
