Owner description: More than 100,000 Jews, communists, intellectuals, gypsies and homosexuals were killed by Nazis between 1936 and 1945 in this concentration camp. Some of the buildings have been preserved in their original form including barracks, and a pathology department where Nazis performed medical experiments on the inmates.

To get here:

Take the S1 train to Orienbury from Fredrichstaβe. You get down at Orienbury as well (last stop).

The bus to the camp is No.804 just outside the main station and leaves every hour past 10. (approx 8 minutes)

If you miss it walking there should take approx 25 minutes. The information counter will have a basic map stuck onto the wall for you to refer to.

Comment(s):

Although certainly a little further than the main tourist attractions located in the AB region (this is in the ABc region), this is certainly something you should consider visiting if you have a bit of spare time (or perhaps when you're tired of walking and wouldn't mind resting during the hour long journey to reach there). Definitely book a tour! Otherwise, it might be a bit difficult to get the 'feel' of the place.

Also, try to get there before 10.30am to get a more tranquil feel of the place before a tsunami of tourists arrive.

Only a 30 minute train ride away from central Berlin. Although most barracks have been torn down, a major part of the structure remains. Not as impressive as Auschwitz, but nevertheless an impressive memorial of Nazi terror (the execution site is shocking). Moreover, this camp already opened in the early period of Nazi reign and was targeted at domestic prisoners ... Surreal. When visiting Berlin, a must see.

This was a fascinating tour. Our guide, Rob, kept a good pace while imparting a huge amount of background information about this dark time in Berlin's history. It's certainly not a light hearted tour but Rob made the experience enjoyable all the same & the camp itself really is a must see if you're in Berlin.

Although Sachsenhausen is not Auschwitz it is certainly worth a visit. We decided to take our own tour around the camp and were there for about 4 hours. There is plenty to see and take in with some superbly preserved burnt barracks for all to see. I personally would recommend taking more time to take everything especially with certain exhibits that require a lot of reading. Its is only a 40 minute journey on the S-Bahn from Friedrichstrasse with a 15 minute walk from Oranienburg station so is easily accessible. A great experience that is a must see

It is almost impossible to rate the visit here or find words to express how one feels. So I will say that it was a cheap and easy trip on the train from Berlin. We are in our sixties and the walk to the camp was pleasant and we got the bus back to the station, the travel links were efficient and quick.
I am glad I went it will stay with me forever.
