Perfect lodging to visit the Kroller Muller Museum & De Hoge Veluwe Park, Otterlo, NL

4.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 30 Sept 2024
This hotel at the edge of Otterlo is easily accessible (and within walking distance) to the De Hoge Veluwe National Park and its Kroller Muller museum and sculpture garden (with its large Van Gogh and impressionist art collection and one of the largest outdoor sculpture gallery in Europe- 160 pieces- a highlight of our week in Holland). We came by public transit from the Ede train station via the 108 bus to the rotunde stop on the outskirts of Otterlo, followed by a connecting 106 bus there which stops in front of the hotel on its way to the museum in the park. The hotel has upscale modern accommodations in spacious guest rooms, very sunny and bright, with very comfortable beds-- definitely worth the price (~ $200). A large indoor swimming pool is available for all guests, with a wellness center (smaller indoor pool, sauna, steamroom and meditative room) also available, but on a bathrobe only basis. Very relaxing.

Cepes, their Michelin award-winning restaurant, does not have menus at dinner, with the fixed dinner selection based upon market availability and the chef's creative bent. The 4 course dinner (@ E. 72.50) includes appetizer, soup, fish/meat, etc.-- all superbly prepared, with an optional wine pairing (@ E. 68), which we ordered, also excellent. We also elected the breakfast supplement (around $20)- also substantial with multiple meats, cheeses, breads and one hot dish selection. Very enjoyable.

The only complaint (and disappointment) was that we were charged $10 extra for coffee/tea service at dinner, which we had not ordered- we were way too full, and which unfortunately has yet to be adjusted. Be specific about add-ons with them during the dinner service!!

Room Tip: Spacious upscale modern rooms. Large indoor pool (note: 2d wellness center "bathrobe only" area);...

The hotel offers a good wellness experience next to a lot of other holiday options (bicycle hire, hikes) and an excellent restaurant. Though it is nicely located in the middle of the nature area of the Veluwe, you can enjoy this hotel even without the surroundings. In any case we did!
The rooms are spacious, modern and well-designed. Bed and shower are perfect and there is sufficient room and seating possibilities for relaxing. The whole hotel offers comfort and space, plus eye for detail and modern interior. It is complete and the staff adds a lot to this. They really are supportive of the eco-friendliness that the hotel exudes all around. Biodegradable coffee-cups, re-usable bottles, ecological shampoo, etc.
The wellness is included in the hotel room price (which is substantial) but not the breakfast (which is a hefty extra). Better to look for combination-offers instead of just booking a separate room.
Notwithstanding that the price made us gulp for a moment, we enjoyed our two-night stay. Especially the staff made this possible.

Room tip: Most of the wellness facilities are non-dressed access, so take this into account.

What a nice hotel this is ! Perfect rooms, bedding, shower, pillows, you name it, it is there ! Breakfast was really nice. A set breakfast is served, but well put together and if still more appetite you can order, another dish from the right hand side of the menu. Free flow of good coffee, tea and juices. Staff likes to know in advance what time you come for breakfast in order to avoid congestion. I think they serve a good dinner as well, unfortunately we were too late with our reservation so had to go out for dinner.

Room tip: Book your dinner timely as, we were unable to have dinner in the restaurant ! Looks like the locals also know this place.

Had an awesome stay at Hotel de Sterrenberg. Just a short walk to the entrance of the Hoge Veluwe Park and the use of the famous white bikes. Enjoyed the wellness centre in the afternoon which was very nice and clean. We were lucky to get a booking at their restaurant and experienced their 4-course dinner, the best dinner we’ve ever had! A very comfortable sleep and a delicious breakfast, and a quick sauna visit before check out. Would very much recommend a stay here.

Horrible guest relations. We were really looking forward to our stay and made this a priority on our visit to NE. My husband tested positive for Covid and I called to either cancel the reservation or change the date. The staff on the phone was rude, unkind and completely unwilling to assist to resolve the matter. A HUGE disappointment!

How unfortunate to read. However, you forget to mention that you have specially chosen the rate that can no longer be canceled or changed. In such cases you can contact your cancellation insurance. Especially in this day and age, we recommend the flexible rate to guests, but you didn't want that. Unfortunately!

We just came back from a day away with colleagues escaping the work-from-home and city life. Sterrenberg was a fabulous experience, with immaculate rooms, large wellness area which we had to ourselves (booked time slot) and fantastic F&B. Highly recommended. Also great meeting rooms.
