My husband and I stayed at El Frade from July 28th to 30th. The hotel is located in a very beautiful location and has a quaint and peaceful feel to it, with the sights and sounds of sheep and cow bells, fruit trees in the yard and flowers decorating the exterior. Check in was a bit of a challenge as I only speak a small amount of Spanish and the owner does not speak any English, but we managed and she was very kind. The hotel room beds were two twin beds separated and they were quite hard with only one pillow. The rooms had no air conditioning and it was pretty hot on night one after a warm day. The amenities are definitely what you would get for a 2 star. Unfortunately, the rooms were also very loud as you can hear people walking up stairs, talking, using the washroom, etc. Breakfast is served at 9 am so usually the noise doesn't start until about 8 am but overall we did not sleep much during our two night stay.

Some positives were that the rooms were very clean and the bathroom was spacious and had a nice shower. Also the staff were very friendly and served a nice breakfast. Just be aware of the language barrier, if you speak some Spanish you should be fine. One other note is that the hotel is 4 km from Ribadesella, so you will need a car in order to drive in to town. Parking was fine at night but so bad during the day that we couldn't find anything so just left Ribadesella and went to Cangas de Onis for a nice lunch. If you plan to spend a lot of time in Ribadesella you might be better off to stay directly in town. Maybe with a hotel that provides parking.

When we arrived at this hotel and opened the bedroom windows we thought we were back in the Alps with the sound of cow bells in the distance. A delightful quiet and very clean spot only 10 minutes from the sea at Ribadesella. The owner was very welcoming and served a lovely breakfast, beware she cannot speak any English, but that is all part of getting away from it. The hotel is not far from the main highway so a good position to explore this part of Asturias. A three night stay was about right and I would return. Please note high season charges are just for the month of August.

Room Tip: Ask for a view of the mountains.

We booked a double room, had it confirmed as a double three days before arriving and were given a room with twin beds. Owner claimed it was fault of Booking.com. Not even an apology, just a shrug of the shoulders. Worse still the room was on the top floor, effectively in the roof space - we couldn't stand up in most of the room. Breakfast was fine if you like ham and cheese and white bread. No cereals and we were too late for fruit on the first day! This is a bed and breakfast not a hotel.

It is a pretty building, beautifully clean and presented. And Madam seems to have plenty of Spanish customers to keep her busy but I would recommend care when booking about what you're getting.

Room Tip: Avoid top floor rooms.
