Our rating is based upon the lack of interest in us as guests, lack of dining facilities during our stay, the appalling breakfast, and breakfast service.
We had booked a self drive touring holiday with Brittany Ferries travelling via Portsmouth to Santander and returning to Prortsmouth via Bilbao. My wife and I were returning to the North West of Spain following a superb holiday last year. Brittany Ferries arrangements had been first class in every way. The Parador style accommodation used on our tour exceeded our expectations for rooms, locations, service and food. On our recent trip (7th-14th June) All was going well despite very mixed weather, we were looking forward to our visit to Cangas De Onis to view the medieval bridge with the crucifix suspended from it dating back centuries. In addition the shrine of the Madonna in the cave and the magnificent Cathedral built high up in the Picos De Europe mountains. We had reserved a one night stay at La Cepeda hotel.
As other reviewers point out the views from the terrace over the town towards the mountains are indeed stunning.
The hotel resembles a 'ghost town' reception covered intermittently,
No sign of other guests.
The restaurant is closed Sunday Monday and Tuesdays in the evening. There is NO Coffee Shop type arrangement.
At check in we were informed by reception that breakfast was served from 8.00am;
A point confirmed on a notice in the spacious but deserted hotel lobby.
As pointed out by other reviewers, the hotel is situated up a winding rural lane about 1 km fro the town centre. Thus we decided to eat a meal at lunchtime and purchase snacks for a supper in our room.
No tea or coffee making facilities
we went down for breakfast the following morning at 8.10 am. Again only guests.
It was obviously not ready and when a member of staff (male) arrived he informed us that breakfast was served at 9.00pm We apologised and explained that we had been told that it was served from 8.00am. He said it was OK and began bringing out a small selection of cereals, a jug of milk. A bowl with some whole apples and a couple of old kiwi fruit.
We each ordered café con leche which he brought to the table along with VERY STALE BREAD, STALE DOUGHNUTS,
There were no cheeses, cold meats, croissants, fresh rolls or toast. Basically dreadful.
As customers with many years experience touring around Europe including stating in some 'budget' class hotels, this was without a doubt the WORST BREAKFAST OFFERING we have ever had.
It should have made it clear to Brittany Ferries prior to our sailing that there are issues so that we could have sought alternative accommodation. Time and money wasted I'm afraid

Our nicely furnished bedroom on the 3 floor faced this view BUT the actual window was very small.

Room tip: Ask for mountain views over the town.

The hotel is away from the city centre; it has a nice view on the surrounding hills but of course a car is needed to get there.
The rooms are big and well kept. We found the staff a bit coldish, in contrast to the extreme cordiality we found throughout northern Spain. But maybe it was just something occasional.

I was so amazed at the views from the rooms and balcony on a previous bike holiday, I came back for my honeymoon! We had a ground floor room which we paid a small fee for and the room was huge. And the view, well, I would never tire of. Its the same from the bar / breakfast balcony, breath taking.
The hotel itself was very quiet, but early October is at the end of the season. We only seen three other couples at breakfast on one day and the one evening the restaurant was open, there was only one other couple.
The staff were friendly and English was hardly spoken, but this is why you come to this part of Spain.
Being so close to Santander, The Picos mountains are incredible and unfound by most European tourists. Amazing for a biking and driving holiday and Cangas De Onis is a great base to stay and this is a great hotel.

Room tip: Pay the extra for the larger rooms.

As others have said, no one in reception on arrival, but someone came promptly when we phoned the number indicated. The same person was the waiter in the restaurant later, and was polite and helpful. We enjoyed a pre dinner drink outside on the terrace with wonderful views. There weren't many guests, which seemed odd at first, but it was after the summer season, and the hotel stands on its own well above the town where all the other hotels and amenities are. Many of the items on the restaurant menu weren't available. Of those that were, some came in large portions and some small, while some were quite sophisticated, so it was hard to judge what to order. I think the hotel would do well to modernise and simplify overall, and perhaps simplify to a brasserie style menu. The views are to die for, but I think to hotel needs to adapt to modern demands.

These reviews sound like different places, sadly we got the crap version. We had a cracking view if we took turns climbing up to the tiny window. Room was ok, comfy enough corridors & social areas dark and uninviting, doors closed so you felt nosey trying to find the bar/cafe or restaurant. No staff at arrival, smiled at a guy sitting watching tv then noticed sign to phone for reception. Picked up phone then guy on sofa dragged himself over to sign us in. Were given a key but little else info. Worst breakfast all week, nobody to help or inform, sweaty cheese & ham on a shelf, plates other side of room, had to ask for drinks, bowls, milk, spoons. Nothing hot, not even a toaster here.

The view from the terrace is spectacular but we didnt feel welcome in the bar when ordering drinks to take out there.
There is covered but open parking, not totally secure.
The restaurant only gives English menu reluctantly...if you ask...people we met were very disappointed with the meal & service so we avoided. They had also asked about air.con & were told "This is Asturias, we dont need air.con" then the guy walked away.
The walk to the village is steep and dark and takes a good 15 minutes.
Staff were rude & impatient wherever possible.
We will not return & dont recommend as Asturias is beautiful, the people lovely, this place ruined it.
