Rude staffs in 4 star hotel

2.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 16 Jul 2012
1) 3 of my friends and I arrived and checked in on 13 Jul at night. While we are on our way to our room in 7th floor, we are talking to each other and I do agreed that we talked very loud because all of us are first time to Macau and we are very excited. At the same time, a hotel staff pass by there and when he noticed that we talked very loud, he shouted at us with his finger pointed to us and said, ”Hey, Hey Hey…keep quiet and go in!”. One of my friend do apology because we felt that we are wrong at the first place. But why can’t the hotel staff talk to us in a proper manner? there are many ways to request us to shut up such as below:
a) Excuse me, it was very late and can u please slow down your voice?
Or a very simple English,
b) Excuse me, please keep quiet.

I was wonder why he must use the word Hey Hey Hey. It was just very rude!

If you're looking for somewhere fairly cheap, you've come to the right place! But don't believe the photos like everyone says -- the rooms are indeed very run down e.g., super old carpet, our bed was rock hard, and the bathroom was a bomb site, etc.

It's also impossible to get a taxi leaving the hotel -- they simply don't come this way! So be prepared to catch the bus which is cheap as chips and just a stroll across the road.

Bottom line: Not bad if you just want a place to sleep but there's better out there for a little bit more!

The place is seriously in need of renovation. It has an 'antique' feel, which borders on eerie and dirty. The bed was hard and not very comfy. There's a bath tub, but I would never use it. There is no handheld shower, only a (very old) rain shower. The price is quite cheap, but I would pay $30 more for a much better hotel (Casa Real).

I had mixed expectations of this hotel from what I read on Tripadvisor. Overall, we were very pleasantly surprised. Unfortunately our first impression wasn't great, we got directions from the hotel about where to get their shuttle bus from Macau Ferry Terminal. When we got there, we found a young guy who gives advice on many shuttle buses. He didn't speak a word of English and was extremely rude. It was very humid outside and we just wanted to get there. Many other hotels have a bus every 10 minutes, a schedule of once an hour is definitely not enough.

We were very impressed with the lobby and how friendly the staff were. I put in a complaint about our very negative experience with the shuttle bus and the manager handled it brilliantly. He apologised and acknowledged what I said. We requested a room with a view and boy we got it! Our deluxe room up on the 10th floor had spectacular views. Each room has a bathtub which is rare. The room was very clean and had traditional decor which I liked. The bed and particularly the massive feather pillows were very comfortable. We got a relaxing, peaceful night's sleep. The main highlight for us though has to be the gorgeous swimming pool and incredible spa facilities. This part of the hotel is top class, absolutely fantastic well thought out, modern design. It's clear this has been renovated recently. We also found it extremely easy and cheap (2.80 per person) to catch the airport bus across the road. The location of the hotel is great, many amenities and restaurants nearby. Also, a huge casino across the road.

Food in the restaurant was delicious, we both really enjoyed our food and impressed with the house wine. However, we noticed a few staff training issues. They are all very friendly but not at all as attentive as they should be. For example, they prioritised preparing for the buffet breakfast the following day rather than take our finished plates away.

We believe this hotel is fantastic value for money. For the same price as many other standard rooms without spa facilities or breakfast, we got a free upgrade to a deluxe room and enjoyed reading the complimentary newspaper over our breakfast. They have a good balance of traditional chinese food as well as Western food on their menu and in their buffet breakfast. Overall, absolutely delighted with our stay at The Regency and would definitely recommend to friends and family.

Room tip: Put in a request for a high room with a view :0)

    Pros

    - good price
    - friendly English speaking staff
    - large rooms
    - convenient location, short taxi ride to Cotai or Macau
    - adequate breakfast

    Cons

    - locally rated as 5 star but I would suggest it is closer to 3 star based on US hotels
    - it is not a non smoking hotel so be prepared to be given a smoking room
    - very hard mattress on bed
    - no casino (depends on your reference whether this is a pro or con)
