This family-run trattoria located at 65 Via Selva, in the village of Baruffini about 10-15 minutes by car or taxi from Tirano, has been in business for a long time. The reason is because of the hospitality, familiarity with the patrons, whether they’re repeat customers or new guests, the prices and fabulous dishes, all delivered with care and love of the local produce. People visit from nearby Switzerland to eat at this establishment. I’m no stranger to this trattoria, and I enjoy sharing it with my friends when we’re in the area. We’d highly recommend the local cured meats, sciatt (buckwheat and cheese balls), salad, and any of the home-made desserts, all washed down with the local wine. To finish the meal, if you still have any space, have a coffee or tea. The views of the mountains from the dining room are an added bonus.

It isn't the typical Italian food that you'll find here.
Yes, they have delicious affettato (sliced cured meat), pasta and meat, but this pearl of the world's cuisine is the home of some of the most delicate and precious flavours on Northern Italy.

My favourites:
Pizzocheri, buckwheat thick pasta, in potatoes and green vegetables, cheese and butter.
Tagliata di Manzo, a sliced tender beef steak, served with rocket and parmesan, or local herbs sourced by the cook.
And the absolute best: the Sciatt, whole wheat dough balls filled in local cheese.

But the options are so many more. Deer ravioli, wild boar tagliatelle, delicious risottos, grilled meat and tasty cakes.

What make this food special is that all ingredients are local and you can tell. Everything taste so healthy and yet so rich and full of flavour. Every recipe is cooked to perfection by the family-run restaurant. Not to forget the location, a balcony over the Alps, and the unique shy character of genuine welcoming mountain people. All this for great value (and great wine!)

Altogether, one of my favourite restaurants in the world !

Described as ‘cucina tipica Valtellinese’ – typical Valtellina cuisine. Located at 65 Via Selva, in the village of Baruffini about 10-15 minutes by car or taxi from Tirano, this family run trattoria is well worth the trip up the mountain. Not only will you enjoy traditional regional dishes made with great care, but you will enjoy your meal while taking in the beautiful views of Tirano and the valley, with vineyards and alpine scenery surrounding this location. As part of a group of nine, we were all treated like family and experienced genuinely warm hospitality, only truly experienced once you move away from big cities. Highly recommended is a three-course meal of antipasto (made up of thin cuts of locally produced meats – bresaola, salami, prosciutto, with a variety of pickled vegetables); sciatt (small balls of buckwheat batter filled with local cheese, served with salad); washed down with local wines from the area. To complete the meal, we had coffee or tea and a variety of desserts to choose from, all made on site – panna cotta with a choice of different berries, home-made apple cake with a scoop of gelato, buckwheat cake (a house speciality), and each was personally decorated. Always a must on my list of restaurants to visit whenever I’m lucky enough to be in the area.

I went to Trattoria Del Simone, in Barruffini, a short drive or bus ride from the town of Tirano, with 12 friends from Australia in September. This was their first time to this region and to eat some typical Valtellinese dishes. Not one person was left disappointed or hungry. We started with antipasto - Bresaola (thin slices of dried meat) and Sciatt (a small cube of delicious local cheese dipped in buckwheat batter and deep fried); second course was pizzoccheri (buckwheat pasta) and dessert was a selection from sorbet with braulio (a Valtellinese herbal drink, and great digestive), fruits of the forest with ice-cream or panna cotta. Most of our group opted for the sorbet with braulio and were delighted with their choice. The meal was beautifully accompanied with lots of the local wine and to finish the lunch, we had coffee, all served with care by the wonderfully friendly staff. This was definitely great value for money and an experience not to miss in this area. It's best eaten at lunch time, because the food is plentiful and very filling. I'm visiting again next year with different friends.
