We booked this hotel for a one night stay. The only reason for visiting Sungai Petani was as a pick up point for a bird watching trip. There do not seem to be many other reasons for a foreign tourist to visit the town!
The hotel is a fair distance north of the town centre. Our initial taxi transfer from the railway station cost 20 ringgits. A Grab ride to the clock tower cost 7 ringgits and the taxi back to the hotel was 15. Both times we asked a taxi driver to take us to the hotel resulted in an animated discussion amongst the assembled cab drivers as to where it was. It is not yet, therefore , well known in the town. If you get similar problems tell them that it is near the hospital and next door to the community college.
I found it difficult to review this hotel. Undoubtedly we had good value for money as we only paid 90 ringgits (<£20). At first glance, with the water feature in reception and the lounge areas we passed on the way to our room, it had the feel of a more expensive hotel. Our room was quite small. It had a kettle, a/c and tv but no fridge or safe. The bathroom was ok but the “hot” water tap in the sink never delivered anything that approached tepid. The shower water was scalding however. It had a kettle, a/c and tv but no fridge or safe. The bathroom was ok but the “hot” water tap in the sink never delivered anything that approached tepid. The shower water was scalding however. Tip - the shower head in our room reached the sink so you could get hot water for a wash or shave that way. Cleanliness was not at a premium, our bed clothes had been written on and we had ants in the bathroom.
We were asked for a 50 ringgit cash deposit at check in as well as full payment by card. The deposit was returned when we checked out.
We were given vouchers for a “simple” breakfast so, given what we had paid, we were expecting toast and coffee. While the breakfast we got was far from the best we have eaten the was a surprising range. Water melon, cereals, porridge / soup, rice, noodles fried eggs and sausage were also available.
There are a few shops and restaurants near the hotel. A big bonus is that there is an excellent Chinese seafood restaurant (Jade Garden) a couple of minutes walk away.
Based on the price we paid I have give a four star rating. My wife, who is more fastidious than me, would have given a three. More
