Review of The Whalebone

Popped in for the first time today as wanted to experience new restaurant. It was very busy however managed to find a seat and the staff cleared the previous persons glasses away very quickly. Ordered food and drinks using the table app and very impressed as drinks arrived 5 mins after ordering and food arrived piping hot, fresh and well presented from the kitchen. I would say this Wetherspoons is better than the Globe in Kings Lynn by far. The garden and courtyard should be nice when it is finished.

The Whalebone is a brilliant improvement on the old White Heart Pub pity about the strange new name though. I have only tried it once so far with some friends and the food was very cheap nicely presented and arrived very quickly. The problem we experienced was ordering it, the bar staff where very few a far between, even though the place had plenty of customers. They seemed to have little idea of bar work serving some people immediately and others like us left standing, to the point where we talking of going elsewhere. The situation was saved though in the nick of time although the Tonic Water for a friend was off ? so that ended up as Soda water. I will leave it a week or two to see if they simply need a bit more practice, but I will go back it didn't put me off although I can`t say that for our friends.

Wetherspoons have transformed The Whalebone from a run down local to a vibrant modern pub/restaurant. There is a large open area in front of the bar and several cosy areas further away. It has been controversial in the town but the overall effect has been to bring more business into the town though some of it has been of the less desirable sort. The first ten days since opening have seen the staff overwhelmed and very slow service but this is likely to settle in time. Several staff were engaged in delivering orders ordered by people with the mobile app which slowed the bar service to an average wait of 20 minutes to get served. That said, once food was ordered it arrived in about 20 minutes which is faster than most places and it was up to the usual Wetherspoon standards. the decor is pleasing and a good activity while waiting to be served is counting the number of variations in style and covering of the chairs.

Been in couple times for quick beer busy 1st visit opening day 2nd time moderately busy beer we had in good condition lots of choice food looked ok as it passed by !
Prices as Wetherspoons policy very good value .
On 2nd visit saw promotion on menu and big sign near bar for there app for table service for food and drink brought to your table .
Thought give it a go just out of curiosity and laziness ......
Ordered couple of beers on app 15 minutes later nothing had appeared. So went to bar to retrieve ....(the order could be seen on screen in corner of bar area).
Most probably just teething problems and will get sorted in time new staff training maybe.
Wont be so lazy next time and just walk to bar and order !

Lovely building lots of hard work has been put into making it welcoming to then be ruined by drugs & rude and aggressive door staff typical weather-spoons I just hope this won’t kill off the local trades in the area, why on earth this small little market town needs this I will never know. I’m sure in the day time the food and drinks etc will be nice but it’s a whole different atmosphere and animal Friday Saturday night.
Toilet floor covered in piss sinks covered in sick and clearly drugs going on each to there own but if I can’t vape without standing under the shelter but it’s ok to sniff a line in the bogs it screams class this place

Hi Aaron B, we are sorry you haven't enjoyed your experience. We tend to find that we increase trade and visitors to towns that we open in, so hopefully this will be a benefit to our neighbouring businesses in Downham Market. I have passed on your other comments to our pub team and Door staff company. Thanks.
