“Beachfront Magic”
Reviewed 2 August 2012

Based right on the beach at Tekek, a RM10 taxi ride but only about 20 minute walk from the airport (not much fun if you're lugging luggage). The entrance is a bit underwhelming; old sign, sand/dirt entrance with tree roots exposed but once inside , WOW. We had a beachfront cottage (Sea Chalet 3)., no A/C but didn't need it. Wall mounted fan, mosquito net (didn't use it), ensuite, 3m x 5m deck with 2 chairs, table and hammock. No clothes hanging space, only a 5 shelf cabinet. Only 25 minutes to the water and there is a dive centre on site. Took Berjaya Air from Budget Terminal at Changi, 50 minute flight. Hand luggage is restricted to 5 kg and checked luggage is only 10kg.
There is no restaurant on site and breakfast (minimal) is served at the recpion/lounge deck looking out to the gardens. There is a communal fridg. and a honesty white board where you enter up your purchases ( beer, soft drinks, water) and pay for the lot at check-out Plenty of restaurants along the road to the Port at Tekek but only one sells beer ( Chinese Seafood restnt. on right hand side closest to Swiss Cottage entrance) but there are duty free stores all along the road and you can but whatever you wish and take it into any of the restaurants/cafes..
The cottages are not touristy;( no massages, shopping, bars) and if you're not a diver, 5 nights is appropriate.

Room Tip: Beach front or Sea Chalet recommended

Everyone’s idea of paradise is different, and amen to that. Swiss Cottage is ours and as it was for the like minded people we met staying there, families, couples and singles. We had booked a sea view bungalow, with fan, and were not disappointed. The room was very spacious with a compact on suite bathroom, double futon style bed (c/w mosquito net) and the all important kettle. Out front was a very generous balcony overlooking the beach and the fantastic sea view.
Stella, Richard and all the staff are not imposing but always ready to help and answer any questions. If you want to be pampered go up the road to the resort, if you want peace, quiet and a simple way of life, with fun just around the corner, this is the place for you. Breakfast is simple but very adequate and filling and with the honesty bar, with beer, soft drinks and water you can’t go wrong.
The local restaurants are literally 5o meters down the road and the food is superb, and there is a good bar further along the beach called “Pirates” for those wanting something a bit livelier.
Tioman Dive Centre are situated in the grounds and provide an excellent PADI dive experience, we completed our advanced open water with them and were very impressed. The snorkelling is very good for those who are not interested diving and there are also snorkelling trips if you want to go find those turtles.
Yes the shops are like our corner shops at home, but this is island life and these are the locals trying to make a living. They all have a smile and a nod for you and are very welcoming.
Our Tioman experience was amazing!!!

A setting to die for, a crucial understanding of warm service not cosmetic servility, a real passion in the staff and management for guests' enjoyment. Our room was spotlessly clean and well equipped, thankfully devoid of mini bar, telephone and TV. You can't help but totally relax in this place. Honesty Bar always available; feet from near-deserted magnificent beach; yards from inexpensive local restaurants. No bling or brash to be seen! Guests an interesting mix of like-minded travellers of all ages, in full appreciation of Swiss Cottage's unique offering and position. We couldn't believe the sunsets, and feel sure we shall return.

This was the start of our journey and looking back I now have fond memories. Richard and ladies were very helpful and attentive. I love cats and it was lovely to see all the kittens chasing around after the wildlife. Everything was clean and well maintained. The snorkelling was clear and beautiful. Tek tek is a bit dirty which is shame, maybe all the business owners should get together and have a clean up...that would make it more desirable and people would chose to stay here more.

Stayed for two nights recently in a garden-view air-con chalet. Not quite sure why the place gets such favourable reviews - it's certainly quiet, nice if you like lots of cats around you, and the chalet interiors are one step up in terms of quality - not necessarily cleanliness or facilities - from some of the other Tioman resorts. But so too are the prices - MYR 130 (£26 / $40) per night seemed quite steep (relatively) especially as the breakfast was very modest (big spoon of grey porridge with a plate of tasty fresh fruit salad one morning, plus coffee from an urn). The staff are friendly enough and it's definitely a quiet place, as it's right at the end of the main Tekek strip, just before the road heads uphill. I walked to the resort with my wheeley-bag luggage from the airport and that took 10-15 minutes. Tekek is a good part of the island to stay at if you want to feel you are close to the locals, rather than being at a tourist resort (such as Salang). But the other side of that is that there's not much around - just one bar along the beach, and a few eating places and mom-n-pop shops The island's only ATM is just across the track from the airport. I can see the appeal of Swiss Cottage for those who are in Tioman solely or primarily for diving (the dive shop is part of the grounds) and for those who want somewhere quiet and off the beaten track, but overall it didn't really do it for me. Next time I'll be back to Salang again I think.
