My boyfriend and I went here for a week and we both loved it! The food is amazing, every night we ate plenty and there was a gala night on Saturday which was our last night which was even better!
The pool is lovely, a decent size and very clean. The poolside toilets are always clean too.
The room was big and always cleaned well. We had a superb sea view which we didnt pay extra for so we were lucky there. The downside to the room was that the walls were thin and we were unlucky with our neighbours so this did affect the quality of sleep we had on the holiday!
There is a bus stop outside the hotel with regular buses into Mahon which was lovely. The steps to the beach are steep but it's a gorgeous beach that's worth the climb!
Overall a super holiday, we would go back here but would take ear plugs next time!!

Super clean. Well place in calla n porter. Very friendly and helpful staff We would definitely re visit this hotel and the beautiful bay although it is a reasonable walk to the beach via the roadway there is a short cut from the hotel down 180 steps that is well worth the effort

Returned from a 1 week 'late deal' holiday at the Playa Azul hotel on 24th October - just 4 days before the hotel closed for the season.

I really like Menorca and this was our 5th holiday on the island in the last 4 years. However, this is the first time we had chosen this side of the island which is just 10/12 miles from the capital of Mahon.

RECEPTION

The lady on reception was very pleasant but we were immediately 'hit' with a request for 46 Euro to cover the 'Balearics Eco Tourist Tax' for myself and my wife. I knew this tax existed but I hadn't realised that the island authorities had actually doubled the tax since our last visit in October 2017!

For anyone reading this review who is not aware of this 'Tourist Tax', the amount payable depends on the length of the holiday and the star rating of the hotel - for the Playa Azul which is rated as a 3 star superior hotel, the charge is calculated at 3 Euros per day for the first 1-8 days and 1.50 Euro per day thereafter which is not an insignificant amount and should be taken into account when calculating the total cost of a holiday in the Balearics compared to other destinations which don't levy the tax which INCLUDE the Spanish mainland and Canary Islands!

Not surprisingly, our room wasn't available when we arrived so we headed straight to the sunbeds. However, we were delighted when the receptionist actually took the time to find us just an hour later to let us know that our room was ready and to give us our room key - brilliant service!

BEDROOM

We were allocated room No. 107 on the 1st floor. Our immediate impression was that the room was smaller than we are used to and was a little dated but it was none-the-less very clean and tidy. It was fitted with plenty of wardrobe space and a small, wall mounted, flat screen TV and the only English channels available were BBC1 (Ulster!) and BBC news.

The room did have a safe for which the hotel charge 12 Euro per week plus a 6 Euro deposit - another cost which all the other hotels we have stayed at on Menorca have not levied.

The bathroom was extremely small at just 2 meters by 2 meters but with a corner shower cubical taking up 1 sq meter, a sink in the other corner and the toilet itself, there was barely room to 'swing a cat'!

As our room was situated immediately above the main entrance, we did have an unusually large balcony at approx 5 x 4 meters with a great view over the beach (see photo).

The hotel does offer free wifi connection but ONLY FOR 1 DEVICE PER ROOM - for any additional devices they charge 5 Euro for 1 day, 10 Euro for 3 days or 15 Euro for 7 days - again, another additional cost for those who cannot/will not be without social media for the duration of their holiday!

RESTAURANT

One of the main reasons we chose this hotel was due to the excellent reviews regarding the quality of the food on offer. This was certainly well warranted as there was always plenty of choice and I loved the fact that the salad selection was ALWAYS fresh and they offered 2 fish dishes every lunch and dinner which was great!

The restaurant itself was very clean and the staff were all extremely friendly and helpful - which can be said of EVERY member of staff at the Playa Azul from the cleaners to the bar staff.

POOL

The hotel has a very nice pool area situated on a terrace with a great view overlooking the beach below. The pool itself was a reasonable size given the size of the hotel and the whole area was extremely clean and tidy.

We were fortunate that the weather was brilliant for our entire 7 days and this meant that we could spend much of our time on a sunbed. At this time of year the hotel was far from full and a large proportion of the guests were pensioners who seemed to 'disappear' during the daytime which meant that there was no problem getting a sunbed. However, in mid summer I'm sure it would be a different matter as there were probably no more than 100 sunbeds around the pool and there must be at least 240 guests when the hotel is full but at least there is the alternative of a sandy beach immediately across the road down a flight of 182 steps!

ENTERTAINMENT

The hotel only offered entertainment for just 2 evenings of the 7 days we were there. On Wednesday evening they had an English solo singer/guitarist called Andy Jeffs who played for 1 hour 45 minutes - he genuinely seemed to have a great time and so did my wife and I! On Sunday evening we had a solo country and western singer/guitarist who was OK but not 'my cup of tea'.

Apart than spending the other 5 evenings simply drinking in the bar, there was little entertainment to be found in the town as many of the bars had already closed for the season APART FROM 'The Village Pub' who put on a quiz on Thursdays and Sundays plus live Premier League football.

Overall, we had a great holiday due largely to the better than expected weather and the fact that the historic capital city of Mahon was just a 20 minute bus ride away at just 1.70 Euro each way - bargain!

I appreciate the fact that the 'Tourist Tax' has nothing to do with the hotel itself but I really don't like being exploited by anyone and because of this, I will probably boycott ALL the Balearic Islands in future in favour of mainland Spain or the likes of Lanzarote, Tenerife and Gran Canaria!!

Room tip: The rooms overlooking the front of the hotel have great views over the cove and beach below.

Thanks for writing, the comments of our clients always help us to improve. As you say, the tourist tax is not a hotel tax, it is a tax of all the Balearic Islands. We hope to see you next year.
