We stayed 2 nights and had a pool room which gave direct access to a lovely meandering pool. The hotel is in a lovely location right on the edge of the lake. The grounds are well laid out. Breakfast was good and extensive choice. Ate in the seafood restaurant at night. Lovely food and a wide choice of wines and spirits but a bit pricey. Beer about £6 a bottle. Staff are attentive and very friendly.

Room Tip: pool rooms if you enjoy a swim

Our stay on a houseboat overnight was completely magical. From the moment we arrived at the resort (earlier than planned, due to travel changes) we were treated with care and respect, with lime soda immediately brough to us. We had breakfast at the hotel, and relaxed by the pool until our houseboat was ready (we were early- but the wait was wonderful!)

The houseboat cruise was out of this world. My mother and I had a boat to ourselves which was the height of luxury. Our crew were absolutely wonderful, kind, friendly, and always at our service. They were so knowledgable. Jibin the chef cooked us the most spectacular feasts for lunch and dinner, but as I had been ill the day before I was unable to eat most of my share - I still feel gutted, as my mother said it was one of the best meals of her life. Jibin was very kind to me as I felt terrible when he had gone to so much trouble! We loved the two other members of our crew, Syam and Rajeev, and we wish we could come and cruise again! Thank you so much!

The cruise itself was stunning. We set off with some other boats and we were worried we would be near them the whole cruise, but this was not the case at all (though we did moor with two other boats overnight - but at a good distance and we couldn't see them from our windows!) . Sailing along we honestly felt like we were in heaven! Watching the sun set was pure magic. Thank you!! We will remember this trip forever.

Room Tip: Try an overnight houseboat stay!

We spent two nights in one of the houseboats and then four nights at the hotel in mid-February. On arrival at the resort we checked in and were taken straight to the houseboat. If we’d thought about this a bit more clearly we’d have packed more efficiently and only taken one case on board and left the other at the resort.

Houseboat
After a fairly exhausting but wonderful two weeks travelling across India the utter relaxation of the houseboat was bliss. We had asked for a one-bedroom boat but we had a two-bedroom one all to ourselves. This came with three crew including the chef. Sailing through the backwaters was definitely one of the highlights of this most recent trip to India, we loved it. Everything was unhurried and it was a pleasure and a privilege to watch people go about their simple lives on the banks of the waterways. The women doing laundry by slapping clothes on stone steps is a memory I’ll never forget. The boat itself was well appointed and comfortable with an air-conditioned bedroom and fans elsewhere. The food was plentiful (and I mean plentiful) and simply delicious. We had received a phone call at our previous hotel to ascertain our food likes and dislikes and everything was catered to this. No alcohol is served on board but we’d bought some beer and wine on the way to the resort, taken it on board and were served it. The crew were all delightful, spoke English fairly well and we felt secure at all times, even when we tied up on both nights in what seems to be the middle of nowhere.

Resort
After two nights on the houseboat we docked back at the hotel in time for breakfast at around 9am. After that we were shown to our bungalow although check in isn’t normally until 2pm. The bungalow was beautiful and well appointed. There’s an outside shower and indeed the bathroom is more or less outside which took a bit of getting used to, but it’s very private. We had gone for a pool bungalow which gave us direct access from the bungalow to the 250 metre meandering pool which was an absolute delight. The bungalows with their own pools are a bit bigger I believe but the pools are little more than for plunging in whereas the meandering pool is perfect if you like a decent swim. There is an infinity pool at the resort but we had no need to use it.

Even although the resort was full it was restful and peaceful everywhere. The grounds are beautiful and immaculately kept, there are activities if you’re so inclined and a spa. The staff were wonderful and couldn’t do enough for you. On a previous trip to India we’d had a Bengali dessert called mishti doi that I was keen to try again. One of the young chefs, Nazeeb, found out how to make it and presented us with it one evening! Just wonderful as was all the food we had during our stay.

We never go back to places we’ve visited as we reckon there are always other places to go, but we intend to make an exception with Kumarakom. We’re already thinking about another trip in a couple of years!

We stayed at the Taj next door last year and it was a disappointment. That hotel had a tired look about it. The ground floor villas are preferred over the ones where you have to climb the stairs. Luxurious rooms. The yoga was more professionally done compared to other hotels. We missed the sunset cruise. The breakfast spread was incredibly attractive. Will rate this property almost as high as Coconut Lagoon. For the discerning experience seeker

Room Tip: Ask for the villas
