“A Home away from Home”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 15 January 2012

We had camped in on 17th, 18th and left on the 19th of Dec 2011. We wanted a break from the work and city life (Kuwait), so we went to the Coconut Creek. We were impressed with the cleanliness and the tranquility of that place. The food and service was very good. We felt very much @ HOME with the hospitality of Ullas and family. We will recommend Coconut Creek to all our friends & relatives, and we won't mind to go there again.

Room Tip: Good for the whole family stay.

Clean, basic accommodation with delicious, ample food. However it is located beside a church with a large, loud bell which started ringing at 5.30am and continued on a 30 minute basis for at least a couple of hours!

Room Tip: Make sure you choose a room with air-conditioning even in December

Hi,
Regarding the church bell - our property is near to a nearly 100 years old catholic church .The church has maas every day 6.15 am and for that the bell rings every day. Many of our guest like our homestay bz they say that we are near to church. The people has different views. We could not put any final word for this review bz its related to religious fact. Thanks for mentioning basic accommodation with delicious, ample food.

Ulhas babu was very prompt with his replies when I contacted him to book Coconut Creek. His parents welcomed us into their house very warmly.
The first thing which made us immediately take to this place was their cleanliness inside and outside the rooms. We stayed for one night. The rooms were not big enough but good with hot water and AC, which we didn't use as the weather was very cool in early December. The food was excellent to say at the least which me and my wife were completely bowled over. The karimeen fry needs special mention. There is nothing much to do at Kumarakom and we went for walks to see paddy fields, took a 2 hour boat ride arranged by Mr. Babu through the backwaters and the lake and simply sat next to the lake, which is 2 mins walk, watching other boats or the view. I would recommend this place for other people as well. Only issue is we were recommended to take AC room but we didn't use it as the weather was very cool. So the money could have been deducted from final bill like our homestay at Fort Kochi did. Otherwise an excellent host!

Coconut Creek is a beatiful colonial house located roughly 1 km outside the touristic village of Kumarakom, ideal starting point to explore Kerala´s backwaters.

The owners live in the main house building whereas the visitors are welcomed in a depandance with few rooms (all with ensuite bathrooms) and a common kitchen/dining room. The feeling is rather of a Guest house than of a true homestay since there is pretty much no contacts with the owners beside the check in/check out formalities. Never the less the staff that serves at the house is really helpful and always available to follow up on any requests of the guests.

My friends and I spent one night at this place: we arrived in the morning at Kumarakom and rented a small boat to explore the backwaters skipping the more popular, famous and expensive houseboat in favour of a convenient homestay.

We found the rooms and ensuite bathrooms at coconut´s creek extremely clean and nice even if rather small.

The highlight of our stay has been definetely the food, specially dinner. We probably had our best homade vegetarian meal at Coconut´s creek and the staff was really nice in showing us how to properly mix the different ingredients/courses that were brought to us.

Even if a bit outside the main village, Coconut´s Creek is in an ideal location if you want to explore the rural life of a small village on the backwaters. It allows indeed to easly get in contact with the real life of the region with an easy stroll through the immense rise plantations developped around the canals always full of loading and unloading of small boats, the spartan houses of farmers and fishermen and little Hindu temples where people bring offers to propritiate the harvesting.

If you are interested in exploring the backwaters skipping the more turistic (and way more expensive) houseboat option I really recommend to spend couple of days at Coconut´s Creek that offers all in all an excellent value for money and the opportunity to get in touch with the real life of the communty

Room Tip: try to get AC rooms because the combination Temperature/humidity might compromise your sleep :)
