We stayed here for 3 nights in January. The views are breathtaking and as a base for the Mt Cook area (ie not at Mt Cook itself), it cannot be beaten. There are only 6 suites so you need to book early. You need to eat in each night (distance to towns 10-15km away) and what a joy it is as the food is complemented by good local wines and the opportunity to catch up with other guests either over dinner and at the firepit outside. The presence of the view to Mt Cook 50km away across Lake Pukaki dominates the landscape and indeed one's emotions - it is a truly beautiful sight.

Anna and Mike are great hosts and Mike's star gazing walks are wonderfully complemented by hammocks to lay back and look at the stars. Starting time depends on sunset and so in summer expect an 11pm start! You can return from the walk and then spend the rest of the evening gazing at the stars from your grassy courtyard if you wish. It is across his same courtyard that you gaze at those Mt Cook views each morning when you wake.

You need a car here to take advantage of the Mt Cook area and we happily spent 2 days tramping around and doing a 4WD tour of one of the glaciers which was great fun.

Highly recommended - we will return.

Room Tip: all rooms have the same great view

Thanks TJA55. I am so pleased that you enjoyed your stay and good advice to people that they will need a car to visit this area! We are 10mins out of town and there is so much to see in the area but to really enjoy it you do need a vehicle as there is limited public transport.
We hope to see you back here in future!

Kind regards,

Our room was spotless and modern. The bathroom had a beautiful new soaking tub. The view of Mt Cook was breathtaking. The breakfasts were gourmet. Could not have been better. While there wasn't a tv in our room there was a large and comfortable tv lounging room.

Thank you LCCcharlotte. We did debate for a long time over whether to put tvs in the guest rooms and decided to leave them for relaxation and put in a proper media room for those who need it. I am pleased that you enjoyed your stay.

I was tempted to rate Lakestone Lodge lower than 5 on the basis that it might become less busy, but it was perfect. From the extremely comfortable beds to the delicious food it couldn't be faulted. We enjoyed a short walk to the kettle hole up the hill behind the lodge, but otherwise spent far too much time just looking at the wonderful, ever changing view down the lake and stargazing; the Milky Way, satellites, numerous constellations and the Magellanic Clouds - never seen those before and so clearly visible. Mike was really informative, particularly on the development and construction of the eco lodge. Fascinating stuff. Having heard about the lodge from family, we intended this to be a once in a lifetime trip, but I strongly suspect that we will stay there again on our next trip to New Zealand.

Live the dream, as this place is stunning, whatever room you are in you will not complain about the view. Mike welcome us as we were staying here 2 nights and showed us to our room, look well presented and comfortable until he opened the curtains, that was it, I knew then it will be hard to leave a view like we had, it was MAGNIFICENT. We had included in our booking for breakfast and dinner, which was amazing and the staff all very friend and helpful. A bonus to this place is that of a night once the moon has gone down and have clear skies you can see the Milky way from the backyard, which I could of slept outside for that. This is the BEST place to stay at Lake Pukaki and we will be back for another visit in the future.
Thank you so much Mike and Anna.

Room Tip: All rooms have Amazing view depending on the weather.

Somehow I stumbled on the tripadvisor listing for Lakestone Lodge when planning our 3 week trip to NZ and was so taken by the pictures and reviews that the entire trip was planned around our stay there. It was a smart move on my part because it was such an incredible experience. The property is located at one end of Lake Pukaki on a bit of a hill. On a clear day you look out over the baby blue waters of the lake to Aoraki/Mount Cook and you feel that someone has put a postcard in front of your face. The room was clean, modern, luxurious and very private with that million dollar view. We were fortunate to be able to have dinner at the Lodge both nights and it was truly chef prepared cuisine. Chef Steffen prepared a 3 course vegan meal for us that was as beautiful as it was delicious. Breakfast was equally incredible. Our first night there was clear enough for Mike to take us on a night sky tour. A short walk from the lodge hammocks were set up and we lay back and looked at the sky. Mike is very knowledgeable about astronomy which added to the experience. I am still amazed about how many satellites I saw moving across the sky. The people who work there - Mike, Anna, Steffen, and the others take graciousness to another level. Our next trip to NZ will have to be planned around another stay at Lakestone Lodge.
