According to legends a demon king "gayasur" lived in this area. The citizens were terrorized by him so they prayed to Lord Vishnu to protect them. Lord Vishnu appeared in form Lord gadadhar and stepped on the chest of gayasur with his right foot . Gayasur collapsed and his body became the holy city of gaya bounded by pita maheshwar in North, ramshila in south, Mangla gauri in East , pretshila in west and Vishnupad in the center.
The main temple is made up black stones with gold kalash of 21 kg on the main temples shikhar . Once in 2010 the kalash were stolen but the thief's tounge came out and he became blind and returned the kalashas with 10000000/- cash he had stolen from different other places.
In the main temple there is a octagonal boundary within which the footprint is worshipped. Due to time and excessive touches the footprint is now not visible but still few lines are there. There are idols of riddhi-siddhi with Ganesh, durga ma,lakshmi ma,saraswati ma and lakshmi narayan. Outside the gate to "garbhagriha" there are shivalinga with shiva parivar on both sides. On the gate to phalgu ghat on one side there is Lord hanuman and on other side there is idol of Lord gadadhar.
For worship you should buy white flowers , tulsi , chandan , pedas and camphor (kapoor)as these things are favourite to Lord Vishnu. You must also worship the idol of goddess lakshmi with sindoor and Orange flowers
The temple is well kept and coconuts are not allowed inside garbhagriha. You must light all diyas, kapoor and agarbattis outside the temple in spaces provided in the campus. Avoid going during amavasya or pitrpaksh as during that time people conduct shraddh and worshipping God when shraddh is being performed is a bad omen.
