Alkemene is really in our view, unbeatable for self catering,weĺl equiped, clean, well ser iced apartment, ideally placed for Skiathos town and all it's bars and cafe's. We stayed for one week 2015 but are returning for two next year, already booked, the only points worth a mention are,the stairs are a bit steep, and in truth we were not aware of any noise, as described in the brochure..

Very basic accommodation but very clean. Towels and sheets changed every other day. Could have done with a chest of drawers as only hanging space available. Superb location, right near the main street. Excellent tavernas within a few yards. Recommend rooms to the rear of the building as street noise can be quite loud. There is free WiFi but doesn't work in the rooms. Have to go to reception area.

The studios are so close to the town centre and Megalli Ammos beach it is unbelievable. Shop on street corner, range of bakeries, good restaurant next door. Accommodation is basic but perfectly adequate, we had a new oven, really cold fridge. Air con is 56 euro for 7 days. Wifi only seems to work in the street outside, but it works! We had a ground floor studio so it did not have a proper balcony but had an outside area with table and chairs and access to the garden with its lemon trees. We had a great time and if you are looking for somewhere reasonably priced and central this could be for you.m

Room Tip: Ground floor room had a double bed, always a bonus

Arrived later than expected as flight was delayed. We were greeted by a lady who took us straight to our room. looked newly painted so was nice and white! two single beds pushed together, dressing table, mirror, chair, side table x 2, wardrobe, safe, mini oven/grill with 2 hobs, kettle and fridge with mini freezer. Adequate table wear, cookware and cutlery etc. Bathroom taps and shower were a little worse for wear and needed replacing but worked! only down fall was there was hardly any running water from bathroom and kitchen taps! Shower was ok. air con unit looked new and was very quiet at night. This cost an extra €8 per day and safe €10 for the week. balcony was small and over looked a rear yard with lime grape and apple trees or pomegranates! Balcony got hours of sun from About 12.30pm. we had no insect issues at all. room was quiet, beds a little soft but bare able. Facilities enough for cooking basic meals. Cleaner came in every day to empty bins and make beds. Bedding changed every 3rd day. Location was perfect. We were right at the end of the main strip on a quiet side street with a mini market at the bottom. the studios have no pool but you have use of one at the Taxiarchis apartmts just a few minutes walk away from 10-6. We always got a lounger. The owners which were a family were lovely and the bar served cheap drinks and great food. I'm Not sure where the bad reviews have come from for the Alkmene. Our room was spot on for a 2 star! And it was only 2km from the airport.

The Alkmene Studios are located just off the top of Papadiamenti Street, the main street running through Skiathos Town. It's just a few minutes from bus stops 3 and 4, so it's handy to catch the bus down to the many beaches on the island, and just five minutes or so walk to the nearby town beach. A walk to the harbour takes around 10 minutes via the main street and you are in very easy reach of the many restaurants and bars of the old town.

With just 15 rooms, of which nine face the internal garden area and six face onto the street, it's a small building without a pool, a bar or even a permanently staffed reception area. All rooms have a small balcony, apart from three on the ground floor overlooking the garden area, which have small terraces. The cleaning staff visit daily (except Sunday) and keep the rooms spotlessly clean.

We stayed in room 4, which is on the second floor overlooking the garden. It has a small balcony - not very practical for eating out on, and not very private - there is only a wrought iron divider between rooms. On a positive note, this means you get a chance to meet your neighbours! Fine for breakfasts and sitting with a drink.

Although air conditioning is available for a daily supplement, we didn't use it.

Here's our assessment - we stayed from 31 July until 14 August 2015:

(+) Positives
* Great location - handy for bus stops, access to town, harbour, supermarkets and airport
* Spotlessly clean
* Friendly cleaning staff
* Kitchen area includes a kettle and a small oven, as well as hobs - useful for making toast and the first one we've seen in a Greek studio over our last five years of travelling to the islands
* Bathroom includes a hairdryer and proper shower cubicle - no more wet floors!
* Easy to meet neighbours (if you want to)
* Garden-facing rooms relatively quiet
* A useful shower and toilet in the reception area, if you need to change and freshen up after you've checked out and before you leave for the airport (plus a place to store your luggage)

(-) Negatives
* A couple of times during the week we could smell the local drains - apparently when they are 'flushed through' with water. This is not the owner's fault, more an issue for the town council,
* On one evening, an inconsiderate family staying below returned rather noisily in the early hours - but this is hardly the owners' fault, more an issue with the odd rowdy Brit
* The balcony is great for coffee and breakfast, but doesn't lend itself to sitting out having a meal
* The Wifi signal is pretty weak (but nearby cafes have great signals)

In summary, we enjoyed our stay in Skiathos at the Alkmene. We'd recommend it for the budget traveller and would stay again.

Room Tip: Second and third floor, garden-facing rooms are better.
