I stayed here for a conference I was attending, and brought my husband and 6 year old son. The hotel is lovely, very upscale but more times than not, it felt like a bull in a china shop when my son was with us. I'm sure the hotel feels they've made everything family friendly- but as nice as it was, I hate to say it- but it may have been TOO nice. It was very nice that there is a little bit of a tiny town with shops and restaurants built up around it, but if it weren't for that- there is NOTHING close. Using public transportation to get in the city takes at least 90 minutes, as you have to take a 30+ minute bus from the service entrance for the hotel to the closest Metro station (Branch Ave.) Unless you're there for a conference or intend to fork out cab fare to get to the city, this is not a convenient choice for a general DC visit.

Beware! A sharp screw protruded out of the seat cushion on the chair in the bathroom and gouged my thigh when I sat down. Ouch!! Also, several supposedly clean towels placed in my bathroom during my stay were either dirty or stained (with what looked like blood). Lastly, there were several brief and utterly perplexing power outages in the room that resulted in the TV not working (the longest time out was for about an hour). I was so excited to stay at the Gaylord National for our conference, but the experience was - quite literally - a painful disappointment. I hope they check the rest of the bathroom furniture in other rooms so that no one else gets injured!

The Gaylord National Resort and Convention Center is a new hotel located in a previously underutilized land 20 minutes from DC. This is the perfect location for a business conference, but I would not recommend the location for tourists or couples looking for a romantic get-away. Everything is expensive in the hotel and outside within walking distance - you are kind of trapped.

The rooms are modern and calming with nautical art and crisp lines. Glass shower doors. Robes and slippers available upon request. Rooms surround an inner core of restaurants and shops. The stores are fashioned to look like houses. You cannot beat the multistory view of water, sky and Georgetown in the distance. The spa is rather basic to be called "resort."

I grew up in the DC area and coming back on business to this National Harbor area (which did not exist until 2008) was a little bizarre to me. For years, I drove by and looked out at the Potomic from the beltway bridge and saw forest---Now you see a Las Vegas sized hotel and convention center. Kind of weird. In truth--it is not all bad---the hotel has comfortable rooms which are relatively quite given the enormity of the hotel----the convention facility is top notch----But I can't give this place any better than a 3 star for several reasons. First---if you want DC---you are no where near it---for that matter---you might as well be in Alcatraz because you can see it in the distance but the hotel makes it exceedingly difficult to get anywhere near the attractions. Cab rides are costly, and the advertised shuttle service is all but non-existent. Secondly, in a city with wonderful food, the resort is surrounded by every single chain restaurant you can think of serving burgers, overpriced steak, and bad fish (in all seriousness I ate at one fish place and got food poisoning). Third, the service is rude----I asked for a 1/2 hr delay on check out on the last day and got someone snapping at me that it would cost me 60 bucks---in a hotel with over 2500 rooms---you seriously need to charge that much? Fourth---the pool--while big---is indoors and geared at children under the age of 10. So unless another conference takes me to the area--I will stay away.

We were there five days and four nights and it's great!! The facility itself is beautiful, elelgantly decorated and incredibly clean and well-maintained, right on the Potomac River. It's hard to imagine how they keep it looking like it does when you consider the number of people passing through. The rooms were lovely, large and well appointed, with excellent beds. The atrium areas is beautiful as well. The location is great, with a water taxi to Alexandria, a downtown area in easy walking distance with a nice variety of shops and a drugstore for basics, which also felt very safe at night, and reasonable access to downtown Washington DC. The service was incredible!! Everyone was so helpful and courteous, and you could hardly set your glass down before they were right there refilling it. The food was outstanding, too, with lots of vegetables and variety. Yea!!!

Room Tip: Request a room facing the atrium or the river.
