Lifelong south Florida residents, we'd never stayed in Daytona Beach before! We booked rather late, so weren't able to get connecting rooms, but the staff accommodated us by giving us rooms side by side on the 4th floor, and that was fine!
The rooms were both very clean, there were lots of towels (some creatively folded!) and we never saw a single bug. The beds were very comfy.
The kids in our family LOVED the 60' water slide! As well as the "balloon man" who made animal balloons at the indoor garden pool while it was pouring outside. The littlest family members enjoyed the kiddie wading pool and the playground. SUCH a family-friendly hotel! My 36 yr old daughter has a friend who has been going to Sun Viking Lodge every year since she was 9!
One BIG downer... My 34 yr old daughter rose early Saturday morning, bought coffee at the little place by the garden pool, and proceeded to walk down the wooden stairs to the beach by the outdoor pool. Towards the bottom, the steps were slick, causing her to slip and fall, her hot coffee burning her hand, and her knees were sore from landing on them.
So, THIS morning (Sunday), AWARE of the slippery stairs, Colleen was trying to be careful, but fell again! This time, she went right down on her butt, and hot coffee went on her scalp and face, and saturated the front of her top. She'd dropped her coffee and returned to the room in tears... and in quite a bit of pain! She was livid, since she isn't clumsy, never falls, and was aware of the slippery steps, and fell on them two days in a row, burned with hot coffee both times!
We'd noticed that staff washed down walkways, etc. in the morning, so I thought perhaps soap? or something had made the steps slippery, and I insisted that Colleen report the incidents to the office. God forbid if an elderly person should slip and fall as she did.
We went to the office and were told that slip and falls on the steps aren't a common occurrence, and they were sorry that it happened to Colleen. They were nice about it, but Colleen and I went to the stairs and noticed toward the bottom that there's quite a bit of green algae on them - and they ARE vey slippery!
Sun Viking Lodge needs to bleach out the slippery algae and/or put some kind of non-slip surface on the stairs. At the very least, there should be signs warning that the steps are slippery when wet.
