“Away from it all”
Reviewed 30 September 2016 for a stay in September 2016

Bohemian Retreat is situated in a very quiet village but with a car we were able to access local shops, beautiful beaches and places of interest. The owner, Spyros, couldn't have been more helpful arranging car hire and advising us of the best places to eat. The pool was cleaned every other day and the villa cleaned every three days.
The only issue that slightly spoiled things were the wasps and mosquitoes!
This was a very relaxing holiday on the most beautiful island and we will definitely be returning.

“Wonderful holiday”

We stayed at Bohemian Retreat for 10 nights at the end of May 2016 (I'm currently writing this review by the poolside on our last day of the holiday) and had a wonderful time.

The villa is set in a sleepy village, Davgata, which is located on a hillside a few miles above Argostoli. The village affords excellent views down to Argostoli, the surrounding mountains and even across the sea as far as Zakynthos. The grounds / gardens of the villa are beautifully maintained and full of lush plants, flowers and trees. The accommodation comprises of two individual buildings, one of which is the main villa, with bathroom, kitchen and dining area, and the second, on the opposite side of the pool area, has two single beds and an en suite shower room. The villa buildings themselves are simple, but beautifully presented and very charming. We ate at the villa most nights, after enjoying wonderful days out at various locations around the island, and the barbecue got plenty of use. The kitchen had all the appliances we needed (oven, hob, coffee maker, toastie maker, milk whisk etc) so we didn't want for anything. There are a few small supermarkets on the periphery of Argostoli, so we were well stocked at all times.

As I say, the gardens are wonderful, and it was a delight to get up before the kids, make a fresh coffee and sit in the hammock by the pool, reading a book. On an evening, lots of tasteful, subtle lights make the pool area a lovely place to sit and have a drink, listen to music and eat. There's an abundance of wildlife around the gardens, and listening to the doves cooing and watching swallows dive into the pool was another lovely aspect. One of the local cats took a shine to us, and was often waiting for us when we returned from days out. A few trees on the southern side of the garden were very well equipped with beautifully ripe lemons and limes, which meant that the children could make some homemade lemonade, and me and the missus kept our gin and tonics well topped up with the limes.

Spiros was a great host, and a really nice lad. He generally left us to get on with things, but was always on hand to help. He notified us on cleaning times and was extremely helpful when my eldest daughter became poorly with tonisilitus. He met us very promptly early one morning and personally took us to a private doctor and pharmacy, meaning that my daughter could get the right anti-biotics and quickly get better. This was a nice touch, and meant that we only lost one day of the holiday with my daughter being ill.

The island of Kefalonia itself is amazing. Without doubt the nicest island we've been to (and we've been to most in the Mediterranean) and the scenery, particularly in the North, is awe inspiring. We hired a car and would certainly recommend anybody travelling here do the same. The car hire prices were very reasonable, and we enjoyed some wonderful days out at Fiskardo, Antisamos beach, Emblisi beach and Assos. Myrtos beach is overrated, but we still had a pleasant day there. Antisamos and Emblisi are stunning, and there's also a great sandy beach for the kids near Lassi called Platis Gialos. The sea was very clear, which meant snorkelling and swimming were a delight. The weather was kind to us (usually between 25 and 28 degrees with clear blue skies) and every single meal we had was superb. Would highly recommend Casa Grec in Argostoli for evening meals, and The St. George hotel bar on the water front in Argostoli for a drink.

We also went on a boat trip to Zakynthos via Captain Vangelis's cruises at Skala, which involved beach stops at Smuggler's cove (amazing, and well worth the early start as we got there before the hordes) swimming in the sea at the blue caves, and lunch on the island. Would recommend this as a day out, it was lovely.

So, all in all, we've had a wonderful holiday and would definitely return. The Bohemian Retreat is a perfect base from which to explore this magical island, and somewhere where you can completely relax and unwind.

“Incredible place, brilliant host”
Reviewed 26 September 2015 for a stay in September 2015

My fiancé and I just came back from two weeks staying at the Bohemian Retreat.

Spyros was a brilliant host. He really gets customer service and went out of his way to help. He met us at the airport, gave us great advice on places to eat and drink (he has impeccable taste) and even came to rescue when we somehow managed to lock our keys in the car!

We've stayed in some pretty phenomenal places over the years - particularly with work - but this was pretty special. The quality of the accommodation is superb. Chic. minimalist and lots of thoughtful little touches - quality sun loungers, pillows, sun hats etc.

The house, pool and gardens were cleaned regularly and Spyros was considerate in letting us know timings.

Eating outside at the big table, drinking the local wine whilst watching the outdoor cinema was so much fun! The pool area has a really good aspect and gets the sun late into the day.

Davgata is a nice village full of nice people. It's very quiet, but close to Argostoli and easy enough to go for a morning coffee or dinner/drinks in town. The capital is a great little city with a laid back vibe. Also well located for getting around the island - we drove to Fiskardo, Assos and Agia Efimia a few times.

It was basically the best holiday we've ever had, because it was so simple. Great company, great accommodation, great weather, great island.
