If you look for O Celeiro on the N125 around Luz and Almadena, you will see it there, staring you in the face. If you don't look for it, you will probably drive past and miss out on, probably, the best dining experience you have ever had.
The food, the service and the surroundings make this most definitely the best restaurant in the Algarve and, to my mind, the best in Portugal.
O Celeiro (Portuguese for 'The Barn') specialises in fish dishes, with a unique and special touch for each one, but their meat dishes (unforgettable beef bourguignon!) are also quite simply outstanding.
This time round we had tuna steaks, beautifully presented and cooked to perfection with one of chef's wonderful and very personal sauces. I have never tasted anything like it. Absolutely beautiful.
We have been visiting O Celeiro for more than 20 years and, while we have seen the family grow, we have never seen the quality diminish.
Food and drink are served with a flourish and a smile in the most intriguing surroundings. (What is the Top Hat all about?)
O Celeiro is family-run and many of the ingredients are home-grown. These are people who genuinely care about food and service. They know their products and they know about customer service.
You need to drive here or, preferably, take a taxi (the after-dinner Port is not to me missed) but the little effort in getting there will be more than amply rewarded with an unforgettable experience.
