The former British colony was most recently fought over by the Turks and the Greeks. A result of this turbulent past is an impressive range of cultural treasures, from Crusader castles to the tomb of Mohammed's aunt. The island's geography - plentiful coastline with a mountainous centre - ensures plenty of activity all year round.

If you fancy a European seaside but don't have endless cash to spend, look no further. The cheapest beach resorts in Europe for 2019 have been revealed in Britain's Post Office Travel Money Holiday Costs Barometer. It measured the costs of all the tourist essentials, including suncream, a glass of wine, and dinner out for two. In 14 out of the 20 locations, prices are cheaper than last year.

CYPRUS: We were looking to escape the busy beaches of Paphos during our last visit to Cyprus and someone mentioned the village of Kathikas. It took us about 20 minutes to drive to this tiny village (with mountain views along the way). During our visit, the village itself was very quiet. However, we were looking for authenticity (away from the more touristy attractions in Paphos) and we found solace here. PS: this cat kept following us everywhere! Kathikas is a good idea for a day trip!
