Barbados, along side of a few other popular Caribbean destinations, has been known to have problems with petty thefts aimed at tourists. When visiting the city, be sure to make use of your hotel's safe. Do not carry more cash than needed or wear expensive jewelry. Men should carry wallets in their front pockets and women should be sure that their bags are closed while they are shopping or sightseeing. Backpackers should also make sure that their packs are locked while they are wearing them. Be especially careful in areas where large numbers of people congregate.
Another safety concern in Bridgetown is hurricanes. During hurricane season (June - November) visitors should pay careful attention to weather reports. If a storm is forecasted to hit the region, be sure to follow all suggested evacuation instructions. If possible try to leave the island and get to a safe area before the storm hits.
