New Zealand is a paradise for outdoor sports (hiking, mountain biking, kayaking, sailing, fishing, etc) but it also has a vibrant gourmet, wine and arts side to it. Regions such as the Hawkes Bay, Marlborough and Central Otago are renowned for their savignon blanc and pinot noir and their neighbouring towns of Napier, Queenstown and Wanaka have restaurants and gourmet retreats to match. The Hawkes Bay, Nelson and Waiheke Island (just offshore from Auckland) also have vibrant artist communitys, lots of galleries and local crafts.
Hiking includes the famous alpine tracks such as the Milford and Routeburn Track or the Tongariro Crossing, easier multiday coast walks like the Abel Tasman or Queen Charlotte Walkway and lesser know but stunningly beautiful hikes like that along the Hollyford River to the remote West Coast beach at St Martin's Bay ( the Hollyford Track in Fiordland ) or the Humpridge Track (at the foot of the South Island) and the Heaphy Track (Nelson). All of the above offer both unguided and guided private hut walking options. Wanaka and Queenstown offer some of the best day hiking in the country, into Mt Aspiring National Park. There are a myriad of other tracks, but for the novice New Zealand hiker it is a good idea to start with some of the major walks to gain experience.
Kayaking can be superb - especially in the Coromandel, Nelson and Marlborough region. For Wildlife, Stewart Island is a must, with the best birdlife in the country and your best chance of seeing kiwi in the wild. If you can't get to Stewart Island, try the Otago Peninsula with its magnificent albatross colony, seals and penguins or the Catlins for small out of the way beaches, birdlife and penguin settlements. The Kaikoura Coast is famous for its marine trench and sealife with whales, dolphins and seals.
With its huge spine of the Southern Alps, New Zealand has a strong winter sports scene, around 10 ski/snowboard resorts and small club fields in the South Island and two ski resorts in the North Islan, as well as ski-touring, a cross country field, ice climbing and mountaineering.
