The nearest airport to Nicoya is Liberia's Daniel Oduber Airport. The airport is serviced by several hubs in Europe and the United States, as well as a number of cities in the South and Central American countries. Liberia is very easy to navigate. You can either rent a car to reach Nicoya, take a bus or reserve a shuttle. It is only 1.5 hours from Liberia to Nicoya by road.
You can also fly into San Jose Juan Santamaria International Airport SJO, though that airport is larger & you will deal with more traffic getting out of San Jose. San Jose is the major bus terminus in Costa Rica, so of course it’s also possible to reach the city by bus, even from neighboring countries Nicaragua and Panama.
You will definitely need to take a bus from San Jose to Nicoya, as there’s no way to fly directly into Nicoya. Be forewarned that the bus stations can be confusing; the local bus stop is just outside of the airport, but the inter-city buses more frequently arrive and depart at one of San Jose’s two other stops. The most reliable company is called The Costa Rica Shuttles and while it is possible to look up their routes and schedules online, these are sometimes subject to change. On average, the bus ride to Nicoya takes 4 hours and costs $50. .
One alternative is to rent a car in San Jose and drive to Nicoya. Though driving in Costa Rica can be stressful if you are unfamiliar with the rules of the road, the convenience of having your own vehicle can make it worthwhile. The drive to Nicoya is simple: head north on the Interamericana Highway and take the Tempisque Bridge exit to Nicoya.
