The museum was architecturally inspired by the Temple of Amon at Karnak, and it houses the largest collection of Egyptian artifacts on exhibit in western North America ( including objects from pre dynastic times through Egypt's early Islamic era). The founder of the museum was H. Spencer Lewis, the founder of the Rosicrucian Order, AMORC. This organization was founded in 1915 and in the 1920s it supported excavations of the Egypt Exploration Society in Tell el-Amarna (Akhetaten), the city of the Pharaoh Akhnaton. In gratitude, the Egypt Exploration Society donated several artifacts from their finds to AMORC. The Rosicrucian Egyptian Oriental Museum was built in 1932. The museum has over 4,000 artifacts today.
