San Jose is a particularly family-friendly city and travelers will find several attractions that children and parents can enjoy.

Downtown, directly across from the Fairmont Hotel is The Tech Museum of Innovation, which is geared for adults as well as kids. The museum contains the only Imax museum in the area, other than the one at the Sony Metreon in San Francisco. In Cesar Chavez Plaza, the park between the Fairmont and the Tech Museum, is a "pop-up" fountain where you'll see children frolicking, particularly on a hot day.

The Children's Discover Museum is adjacent to Guadalupe River Park, a grassy spot with a walkway for a short walk -- or long one -- along the river.

The City Parks and Recreation operates a large complex just south of downtown encompassing the Happy Hollow Park and Zoo, Japanese Friendship Garden and the San Jose History Park .

Vasona Park.   (actually Los Gatos not San Jose)  There's pedal boats and a miniature steam locomotive train that everyone can ride on (weekends only?). There's also lots of wetland birds milling about. It's a nice place for a picnic.    http://www.sccgov.org/portal/site/parks    [Look for the link on the left side of that webpage for "Find a Park" and then look for Vasona.]

Paramount's Great America amusement park is in adjacent Santa Clara, featuring thrill rides galore.

Roaring Camp & Big Trees railroad will reward the train buffs, bit and small who drive one hour west from San Jose  to Felton in the Santa Cruz Mountains
