Portsmouth was originally settled by Native Americans about which a minimal amount is known.  The area was first discovered by European settlers at the beginning of the seventeenth century when Martin Pring arrived in the area.  Over the first few decades of the seventeenth century, the area was developed by settlers and used as a port where fishing and shipbuilding built up the economy.  It officially became a town in the middle of the seventeenth century and was given its name at that time.  Shortly after that, it was named the capital of the local colony.

When the colonies joined in to the United States, Portsmouth continued to be an important city in the area.  It was incorporated as a formal city in the middle of the nineteenth century, having survived the American Revolution and the Civil War.  Upon becoming a city, the area began to be known for its wealth.  Many famous architects came to the area to build it up, and many of these historic sites remain today.

However, when the Industrial Revolution took over America, Portsmouth’s popularity began to decline.  It never became a large place of industry.  Since that time, Portsmouth has been re-developing as a travel destination.  Today it is popular for the number of things there are to see and do in the area.  For more information on the attractions in Portsmouth, visit http://www.tripadvisor.com/Attraction... .
